MusiquePlus, which started airing back in 1986, was the French language answer to the MuchMusic video channel – and it proved to be a huge success at the time. But over the years viewership had changed and the numbers significantly dwindled. Groupe V Media, the present owners, started to introduce other programs such as reality shows focusing on a young adult demographic.
According to a report last Thursday in the Journal de Montreal, MusiquePlus’ share of the market has plummeted to around 1% per cent – and the show will be coming to an end this summer. They also state a new channel will be created, which will broadcast series and movies dedicated to women.
“MusiquePlus is one of the best-known media brands in Quebec,” said Dimitri Gourdin, Executive Vice President and Head of Corporate Strategy at Group V Media, at a press briefing. People are still attached to it, but it is an attachment of nostalgia. This is what was found by conducting studies.” It is expected they will also be closing their studios located at the intersection of Ste-Catherine and Bleury and streets.
