What’s going on in Montreal –
To mark Federation CJA’s centennial anniversary, GENMTL, its division solely dedicated to the young generation of Jewish Montrealers, will hold the inaugural edition of “Exponential: Redesigning Community Conference”, from September 6 to 9 at the Hotel 10, located on Sherbrooke Street West near St. Laurent Boulevard.
Through a series of talks, panel discussions, fireside conversations, creative workshops , roundtables, brainstorming sessions and networking events, the conference will feature an impressive list of guest speakers, who will share with attendees their unique stories on how they made their mark on the world, whether it be philanthropy, entertainment, social media, business and industry, technology, health, culture or community.
Scheduled to speak at “Exponential” so far include Just For Laughs COO Bruce Hills, philanthropist Stephen Bronfman, Skinnygirl CEO and reality TV star Bethenny Frankel, plus size model and social media cult figure Josh Ostrovksy (aka “The Fat Jewish”), MADD founder Candace Lightner, Jonathan Tetrault from Cirque de Soleil, Jerusalem Post editor-in-chief Yaakov Katz and Dan Seligman from the POP Montreal festival.
As well, “Exponential” will conclude each day on a festive note with a specially themed evening program, which will include an Endless Summer soiree on September 6, the Richter Jewish Chamber of Commerce Promies Awards ceremony on September 7, a Friday Night Lights family friendly Shabbat dinner with The Maccabeats on September 8, and a comedy gala featuring Just For Laughs veterans Elon Gold and Modi on September 9.

This year’s edition of effectsMTL, the largest international conference for the visual effects (VFX) and animation industries on the North American East Coast, is scheduled to take place at the Palais des Congres on September 6 and 7.
Montreal is the fourth largest global centre for visual effects. With an estimated $278 million in contracts for over 187 local and foreign projects, the industry has steadily expanded since 2009, posting an impressive annual growth rate of 27%. Quebec studios have crafted over 21,634 VFX shots for a number of large-scale film productions, including “Star Wars: Rogue One”, “Arrival” and “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales,” as well as the TV series “Versailles” and “American Gods”.
Conferences and panel discussions to take place at effectsMTL include those dealing with women in VFX, how to get a job in the Montreal VFX industry, master classes with world-renowned VFX artists Scott Eaton and Stuart Sumida and a keynote address featuring Kevin Baillie of Montreal VFX studio Atomic Fiction. As well, the conference will have an expo zone, a business lounge, networking sessions and a job fair.

Frank Baylis, the Liberal MP for the Pierrefonds-Dollard riding, will be the guest speaker at the opening dinner meeting for the 2017-2018 season of the Lakeshore Civitan Club. It will take place on September 13 at the St. Hubert BBQ restaurant located on St. Charles Boulevard in Kirkland.
