How To: Look bangin’ for under $20

Rachel Bilson, Lea Michele, Blake Lively, and Jessica Alba. What do all these women have in common? Well, a lot of things really, but from a fashion-lover’s point-of-view, they always look like they’ve crawled out of bed looking fabulous. Let’s not kid ourselves though, the white T’s and jeans they walk out in are well over hundreds of dollars.
The million dollar question is: How do I get that exact look without breaking the bank?
The key to looking like you just spent $500.00 on an outfit is by investing in key pieces and bargaining. These pieces that may seem super fancy but actually cost less than $20.00 will not only add imaginary dollar signs to your outfit but will also make thrift shop owners jealous. Oh, and rummaging through grandma’s closet from time to time doesn’t hurt either.
Here are three pieces every woman should own so you can wake up in the morning looking like Beyoncé: FLAWLESS.
1. A statement necklace – Forever 21, H&M, thrift shops, Wal-Mart, Target…
Chunky necklaces are in. They not only help accessorize an outfit but can relatively make or break an outfit. Sometimes women get confused and feel the need to wear the full on accessories “kit.” i.e. necklace, earrings, ring, bracelets. Ladies, you’re body doesn’t need to shine bright like a diamond. Instead, let the audience’s eyes wander and focus on that one special piece that will make the outfit pop! So, I suggest you run over to your locale Forever 21 or H&M and invest in a cool, fashion-forward necklace just under $20.00. I recommend “splurging” on one that stands out so consider bright colors, or earthy tones like golds and browns.
2. LBD – every woman needs one
You’ve all heard about that little black dress and it’s for good reason. The beauty about being a young, 24-year-old is knowing how to get great finds on a cheap budget. I personally own about four or five little black dresses and only one of them cost more than $20.00. I highly recommend H&M and Forever 21 for this purchase. With just $20.00 in your pocket, you can rock a black cocktail dress. In order to avoid looking like trash though, pay attention to materials and fit. Find a dress that’s not too form-fitting so you can breathe in it. Sometimes, the “blacks” look a little tired and look more grey than black, so keep your eyes peeled. Keep in mind you are only spending $20.00.
3. White tanks and T’s
When I was younger I thought the simplest tank tops and T-shirts were boring and not fashionable. But, as I get older and realize that having GUESS or TRUE RELIGION signs running across your breasts is getting tacky, I began embracing solid colors with no embellishments. Particularly, the white tank tops and T-shirts. I recently became obsessed with pairing crisp, white t-shirts with flared skirts. When you pair a crisp, white top with any colored skirt – especially black or red, your outfit instantly goes from dull to glam. Forever 21 has awesome tanks at just $6.80 a pop and skirts for less than $10.00! This combo is also a great quick summer outfit and can easily transition from workday to cocktail hour.
After owning these three statement pieces, there is also a lot of cheap tricks you can use when wanting to look fashionable on a budget. Macklemore said it best, with only $20.00 in his pocket, “he’s pumped about some [stuff] from the thrift shop.” There’s nothing to be ashamed of when walking into a thrift shop, in fact, it’s become so popular nowadays. But, you gotta be lucky. Not everyone will walk into a second hand store and stumble upon a little gem. It takes patience to rummage through aisles and shelves. At the end of the experience though, when you walk out with six pieces for under $20.00, you feel pretty damn good!
Lastly, don’t think your mother or grandmother are lacking style. You wearing the cropped top, and you on the other side wearing big, pearl earrings – our mothers and grandmothers were rocking those styles way before you were born so take the time to look through their closets (ask them first, of course) and I’m sure you’ll spot something cool. I can also bet that you’ll be the only one wearing
Don’t break the bank. Shop responsibly, but be fancy, huh.
