Michael Chechile new Director General of Lester B. Pearson School Board
The Lester B. Pearson Board of Commissioners announced Monday, June 8, 2015, that Michael Chechile has been appointed as the new director general of the Lester B. Pearson School Board.
Chechile, who joined the board in 1998 as a pedagogical consultant and worked as vice-principal and then principal at three LBPSB schools, was named Director of Educational Services at the school board in 2010 and, in 2014, was named LBPSB Senior Director of Educational Services and Technology.
Chechile succeeds Robert T. Mills who is retiring at the end of July after more than 42 years of service dedicated to public education.
“I believe that the strength of our organization resides in the collective strength of the people with whom I work, “Chechile said. “As Director General, I will continue to bring an emphasis on teambuilding and a strong focus on pedagogical direction within our schools and ensure that the LBPSB is not only a model school board, but continues to be a leader in excellence, student success and innovation.”
LBPSB Chairman Suanne Stein Day congratulated Chechile on his new posting and added that he will keep the board on an even keel despite the difficult challenges facing the board due to government budget cuts.
“Michael’s passion and vision has been instrumental in engaging our students in their learning, resulting in their successes and that’s what we are all about – student success,” said Stein Day. ”His out-of-the-box thinking has greatly contributed to our ability to do more with less and this is an important, unique skill in today’s reality.
“His team-building and leadership style can only result in elevating the effects of that passion,” she added. “We look forward to working with him for many years to come.”
Mills said the Council of Commissioners made a very good choice in Chechile.
“It is without reserve that I congratulate Michael on his appointment,” Mills said. “I am confident he will continue to provide the leadership that will maintain the Lester B. Pearson School Board as a leading school district in North America.”
Chechile, who officially begins his new job on July 1, is the past Chair of the Directors of English Education Network, which brings together the Quebec English School Boards. He has also served on the Steering Committee of the Leadership Committee for English Education in Quebec (LCEEQ), a pedagogical think tank that brings together public schools, private schools, adult/vocational centres, colleges, universities and various educational associations. Chechile sits on the Advisory Board on English Education and is the chair of Synergy, a group of Ed/IT from English school boards exploring how pedagogy drives technology.
As senior director at the LBPSB, Chechile’s passion for and vision of educational technology led to the creation of an educational technology plan within the LBPSB that steered teachers and principals in various educational technology initiatives like 1-to-1 and mobile learning.
Before joining the LBPSB, Chechile, a graduate of Concordia and McGill, also worked as a lecturer at Concordia on Advanced Computer-based Multimedia Design and Development as well as Educational Technology in the Classroom.
At the LBPSB, Chechile was responsible for the creation of the Digital Citizenship Program – a program that served as the inspiration for the development of Quebec Ministry of Education resources related to learning in the digital age. Chechile was responsible for bringing the first-ever Google Applications for Education Summit to Quebec.
In 2014, Chechile was presented with the Canadian Association of School Administrators (CASSA) EXL award for Quebec which recognizes excellence in educational leadership.
