New Champlain Bridge opening date
New Champlain Bridge – Signature on the Saint Lawrence group (SSL), the consortium run by SNC-Lavalin, said in an update today they still plan on having the new bridge open by the end of this year.
With more workers and shifts having been added, after reports last October of the challenges they were facing – the consortium said the issues were ‘anomalies that ranged from repairs to minor issues and that three-quarters of them had been resolved’.
They are even aiming to have it open before Christmas, according Annie-Claire Fournier, a spokeswoman for the consortium. “What I can tell you from SSL’s perspective is that the objective remains to deliver the bridge in December 2018,” she said.
Federal Minister Amarjeet Sohi, responsible for Infrastructure and Communities, also believes the goal is realistic – yet the federal government has still commissioned a study of ‘how much it would cost to keep the existing 55-year-old bridge open to traffic beyond 2018’.
The new bridge will be one of largest in North America, replacing the old structure that has been there for 56 years. It is one of the busiest bridges in Canada and for years it has been slowly falling apart.
A technical briefing with updates is supposed is supposed to be given tomorrow.
