Montreal Canadiens Mid-Season Report Card: No Hope Left
Montreal Canadiens – Well I wanted to do a mid season report card at the 41 game mark but I wanted to wait hoping for some change. However, even though the play has improved, the points don’t add up and all hope is lost.
Most of my report cards this mid season have been all Fs except for 1 during that 5 game winning streak where we thought it was finally going to turn around. Well it didn’t. With 37 games remaining the Canadiens sit 8 points out of a wild card spot and even by some miracle they make the playoffs, this team is NOT winning anything.
Some of us have thrown in the towel, some of us are still waiting for the team to turn around. For those on the positive side, I definitely admire you passion but lets be real. If by some miracle the Habs do make the playoffs, are they really going to get number 25? No. Besides, Price, Webber, Mete, Galchenyuk and Drouin, is there any other player to build around? No. Besides Scherbek in Laval, is there anyone else who has potential of making the lineup? No. This team really has no future. Bergevin’s 5 year plan is over.
Personally, I’ve accepted it. I would like to see this team start over. Internally, I’m sure the team management are thinking the same. With every 2 points not earned, it comes closer to make that judgement call.
For when that call comes. These are the players that need to be traded:
Plekanec – Salary way to high for a 3rd line centre. Could definitely get some draft picks
Shaw – His playoff success can definitely get some young assets
Gallagher – I don’t want to see him go but for the rebuild process to go faster. I’d definitely trade him for young prospects.
Petry – Draft picks
Pacioretty – Look, if he wasn’t the captain and if his salary was not going to be increasing to the $6 mil mark, then yes, I’d like to see him stay. However, if and ONLY IF, you can get a big up and coming centre and we are talking number a 1 centre that is ready to play right away. Then yes!
However a person who would have to sell the players would be the GM and MB, needs to go. He’s had his chances and from his last press conference I can tell he has lost a lot of confidence. But externally, they won’t tell you that. The Canadiens are also a business and still need to fill up the arena, still need your hard earned money from the food stands and merchandise. So they will always let you know that there his still hope. But there honestly isn’t. Marc Bergevin’s 5 year plan is over and the Montreal Canadiens need to let him go and press the reset button for the Habs to have any hope for the future.
So on to the mid season report card: simple, a big fat F.
