The 2013 St. Andrew’s Charity Ball
Celebrating Scots Women of Canada with Guest of Honour, Ms. Karyn A. Brooks
Montréal (Canada) – It’s been called one of Montréal’s finest society events of the year, presented by the St. Andrew’s Society of Montréal. The 2013 St Andrew’s Charity Ball will be held on Friday, November 29th at Marriott Chateau Champlain Hotel.
Every year, 400 guests are enchanted and entertained by Scotland’s vibrant heritage and culture with music and dance presentations by the oldest organized pipe band in North America, the thundering and colourful Black Watch Pipes and Drums, precise young Highland dancers, graceful debutantes waltzes, and of course, the ceremonial slaying of the wee beastie, the Haggis. Guests whirl and twirl the night away to the renowned 1945 band.
The Ball’s theme for 2013 is Celebrating Scots Women of Canada. The St. Andrew’s Society is proud to announce that this year’s Guest of Honour is Ms. Karyn Brooks, senior Vice- President & Controller of BCE and Bell, Canada’s largest telecommunications company. She also sits on the Board of Trustees at Queen’s University and is Chair of the Audit Committee. Karyn is active in international and domestic activities related to the accounting profession. In 2009, she was named one of Canada’s Most Powerful Women: Top 100TM by the Women’s Executive Network. Karyn was born in Montreal and raised in Niagara. Over the course of her career she has worked in Toronto, Calgary and Montreal. She is married to Bob Gillies and has two grown sons, Ian and Cameron, who live in Calgary.
This year’s Ball celebrates the 178th anniversary of the founding of the St. Andrew’s Society of Montréal. The proceeds, generated by ticket sales, a silent auction and the support of patrons, provide support to the Scottish and larger community. This year the goal of the event is to raise $25,000 towards the establishment of a fully endowed chair of Canadian-Scottish Studies at McGill University.
