Celebrity Chefs take on Cancer
Celebrity Chefs – On Sunday October 29th, 2017, an all-star lineup of celebrity chefs from Food Network Canada joined the top 50 fundraisers of a campaign in support of hereditary breast cancer research at the Jewish General Hospital, benefitting cancer patients from Montreal, Quebec and beyond.
The first edition of the fundraising event and gala dinner held at the Arsenal on William St., brought together home cooks and amateur chefs in a live competition – an initiative of the Quebec Breast Cancer Foundation and the Jewish General Hospital Foundation, and presented by the Avon Foundation for Women Canada.
With knives sharpened and ready, celebrity chefs Tyler Florence, Kimberly Lallouz, Mark McEwan, Danny Smiles and Michael Smith helped the participants hone their skills earlier in the day – before the main showdown in the evening, when five teams of 10 people competed to earn the title of ‘Culinary Showdown Master’.
Each team was headed by one of the chefs who led them in the creation of three unique dishes – all from a box of mystery ingredients, with each course being time-sensitive and all the ingredients provided having to be used. The dishes were then judged for taste and presentation by a panel including Chuck Hughes, Senator Larry Smith, Mitsou Gélinas and Mitch Garber.
The winners of the Culinary Showdown were led by Food Network star, Master Chef Tyler Florence. Two members of his team; Diane Samberg and Linda Sculnick are friends of mine and together they helped raise enough funds to participate in the event in support of two of their friends Reesa Gurevich Soto, who was unable to attend – and a third member of the Chef’s team, Sharon Reinish, my dear sister – who is in a battle of her own against cancer. Like the warrior she is, she took this battle to heart and winning was just the ‘icing on the cake’, as she just loves to cook. Sharon is an inspiration to many – and well, she has my heart.
The fight against this disease is far from over, but initiatives like the Culinary Showdown are leading the way towards a better understanding of cancer and in the end, making everyone a winner.
The event raised over $1 million – and it raised everyone’s spirits as well. Congratulations to all!
