Discover your inner Mermaid at AquaMermaid School

Discover your inner Mermaid – or your inner Ariel. AquaMermaid (AquaSirène) is the first in Canada to introduce a school for mermaid swimming with instructional courses and classes that are accessible to everyone. Programs are structured in a safe and fun environment and designed to cater to all age groups and genders. It is both an artistic expression and a fun whimsical way to keep fit – and sure to be a hit for kids’ parties!
A few different options and courses are offered, all taught by a ‘professional mermaid’ and the owner and founder of the school, Marielle Chartier Hénault. They also offer mermaid photo shoots which include: Professional mermaid makeup, photo shoot by a professional photographer and the shots on a CD. There is also a corporate mermaid package where you can have a ‘nautical maiden’ attend your next company event, as well as a program for men called AquaTriton. They already have a few males who are interested, usually those who want to boost their scuba diving expertise.
“You need you to be at least 7 years-old and participants are required to know how to swim,” Marielle said in a recent interview. “There’s been a huge wave of interest. Right now, there are two main shoppers, little girls who just want to live the dream and older girls, 18 to 25, who are hunting for an exercise… it’s really a complete exercise. It’s a major fin, so you push a lot of water.”
First you learn to do the movements with no the tail, then you start off gradually with the most important movement, the dolphin kick. The courses are primarily based on the theory of diving and as you progress, you also learn underwater spins, breath management and where to ideally to put your hands while swimming.
“It takes some effort at first to swim with a tail,” she explained, but notes that especially for children, it’s like second nature.
The tail is basically a ‘monofin’ made out of plastic and covered in swimming suit fabric, generally Spandex the plastic is usually really hard, but becomes far more flexible as the fin extends from the feet.
At the moment, the classes take place at the AquaDome in Lasalle, but they are searching for other locations as there has been a considerable demand.
Discover your inner mermaid and take a fantastical dive into a magical world!
