Exploring the world of energetic medicine
By Sarah Wenaus, C.E.E.M.P
In today’s society, many people have begun to seek alternative ways of healing their physical and emotional bodies. Since the dawn of scientific thought, western countries have moved away from their traditional healing methodologies, resulting in the many discoveries that have been made in modern, allopathic medicine. Within the past several decades, however, the west has seen the migration of eastern healing philosophies including Qi Gong, acupuncture and other forms of what one might call “energetic medicines”. This influx of new thought forms has brought about confusion to the western mind which has been programed to trust what authorities on the outside world tell them about their health as opposed to going on their own journey to improve not only their physical bodies, but their emotional and spiritual bodies as well.
The concept that our beings are comprised of more than physical matter is the premise to all forms of energetic medicine. But how can we believe what we cannot see? How can we merge our logical minds with a world that cannot currently be measured? Einstein’s famous formula, E=mc2, changed the course of physics and of history by showing that matter is a form of energy. We can take this same idea and apply it to our physical bodies. If energy must be present before matter can exist, then this rule must also apply to the matter that makes up our bodies.
Since energy must come before matter, then it must also be true that if we influence the body’s subtle energies, the physical body will follow suit. Eastern cultures in particular have studied such energies for millennia and have successfully applied their understanding for enhancing both physical and emotional health. In Chinese Medicine, for example, it is believed that if energy is not flowing through the body’s organ pathways, or meridians as they are called, then the body cannot function at its optimal level until the flow of energy is re-established.
If you are someone who is looking to expand your understanding of this unseen world of energy, one of the best things that you can do is to experience it for yourself. Choose a practice or modality that resonates with you and allow yourself to see the difference that rebalancing the body’s energies can make in your life. Not only will you notice a difference in your physical health, but you may find that you develop a deeper understanding of yourself which can bring a sense of inner peace. In addition, combining energetic medicines with therapies such as Pilates and Osteopathy, which have an energetic component in their own right, can be complimentary.
