Food and drinks, $10 or less, “Plates are photo friendly, all homemade food and affordable for the working class of St. Henri”, owner and founder Alex Bastide says. L’GROS LUXE opens its fourth locale in Montreal, their grand opening gave us a chance to sample their goods.Bastide is not alone in this booming franchise,he has partners, and he says they strategically choose the best locations to please the people.
The restaurant surprised me, a modern take on old fashioned décor, I felt like I had walked into the Green Mile Club in Chicago. Old sofa style couches, chandeliers, antique radios all around the place, resembling the ones featured on the hit TV series The Waltons. The best was the wallpaper,it has made an incredible come back and the resto features stylish antiquated wallpaper. Every location has a different décor, Bastide says, “We try and make each restaurant have their own soul and identity”.
Grilled Cheese, done to perfection, crunchy and chewy all at the same time, the cheese was lip-smacking good. Breaded balls stuffed with risotto, spinach and beef, tacos, sliders and fresh salad with watermelon and cherry tomatoes. The food was remarkably flavoursome; every bite had a taste of fun flavours.
We enjoyed making our own Caesars to drink on the terrace and having a complimentary shot of Bacardi Fuego Rum, their bar is fully packed, including Bastide’s favorite bourbon Maker’s Mark. All are welcome at L’GROS LUXE, its children friendly, vegan and vegetarian selections, ask about their gluten free options. Enthusiastic staff having a blast with the costumers, Alex Bastide says, “We work really hard with the staff to be part of the community”.
Wait for news about a New York opening next! First location in Quebec City opens next month!
