Please read this to help during the holidays – Sun Youth Thanks you!
Help during the holidays – Although Sun Youth was founded as a sports and recreation organization for the disadvantaged youth in 1954, it didn’t take long for the community group to start offering food assistance to it beneficiaries. Coaches were noticing that some of their young layers lacked the sufficient energy to perform well and realized that these kids weren’t getting the proper nutrition at home because their parents had a hard time making ends meet. It was then that Sun Youth started handing out food hampers to the less fortunate families in their neighbourhood.
The next logical step would be to tackle hunger during the Holiday season. The Sun Youth kids took it upon themselves to collect food in their neighbourhood to be able to prepare Holiday hampers for the families in need, which there were many back when the Plateau Mont-Royal was a rather disadvantaged sector, mostly populated by immigrants of all origins. Their food drive was so successful that they had enough food on their hands to be able to feed the poor beyond the Holidays and through the cold winter months.
Nowadays, Sun Youth still counts on the generosity of its donors to provide food assistance for the Holidays while being able to store enough food before Christmas to support its clientele during the first months of the year. The organization is looking for donations of non-perishable food, hygiene products and also new toys for children 12 years and under. Those interested in organizing food drives for Sun Youth may contact the organization to receive posters and also schedule a pickup once the food drive is over.
If you are in a situation where you would need help for the Holidays, you can go directly to Sun Youth’s new service center located at 6700, Parc Avenue, Monday through Friday between 9:00 am and noon or between 1:00 pm and 3:00 pm with a proof of address, a proof of income and identification documents for all household members. No appointment is required to register and only one basket is allowed per family, regardless of the organization providing the food hamper. Registrations are ongoing but those interested should reserve their sport as soon as possible. The Christmas basket distribution itself will take place from mid-December right until Christmas Eve.
