BECK

The unpredictable BECK, one of the most prolific and eclectic music creators of the last century, gave his Quebec city fans quite a special show last night for his first time at the festival.

Beck Hansen began his show with ‘Devil’s Haircut’,  of his Odelay Album, but jumped straight to one of his masterpieces, ‘Loser’. The 1994 hit was by far the best reaction of the night, especially when the entire crowd began to sing the ”I’m a loser baby, so why don’t you kill me…”  verse. Beginning a journey filled with psychedelic visuals and a set list that explored all eras of his colourful discography.

The crowd however wasn’t always as responsive and engaged to the unconventional star demands. His request to sing ”Even if you don’t know the lyrics” to Prince’s  ”Raspberry Beret”, honestly, wasn’t a success. The crowd stayed rather silent or hilariously trying to sing something. But Beck and the crowd did not really care much and it didn’t take much time for the party to start again.

The 48-year-old American also showed his impressive and smooth improvisation skills during a rare solo acoustic version of  ‘Debra’ (A personal favourite). The star began adding funny lines within the first 30 seconds of the song, quickly singing random rhymes  like  ”Quebec, because my name is Beck”. The absolute highlight of the night !

Among other strong moments was when Beck presented his bandmates. Each band member got their moment playing a 70-80’s cover with Beck! Anything from Phil Collins’ In the Air tonight, to the Rolling Stones’ ”I miss you” and even some Talking Heads.

Beck finished the 80 minute performance charming the crowd with his harmonica grooves and also requesting our flashlights to illuminate the historic plains. A request that wasn’t ignored!

PHOENIX

Phoenix was also performing for their first time at the Quebec City Summer Festival. The group from France warmed up the stage before the main event of the night! The crowd, that actually wasn’t very dense for the first half of the show, enjoyed the very addictive rhythms of the indie band’s most successful album, ”Wolfgang Amadeus Pheonix”, released in 2009.

A special cheer to the badass young lady who was rocking in the front row!

Finally, the performance gained a high peak of excitement and intensity when the lead singer, Thomas Mars, started quite a long session of ‘Crowd Surfing’  and ‘Crowd Walking’.
