HOW TO: Get the Mad Men Look This Fall
By Alyssa De Rosa – mtltimes.ca
It’s time to retrieve all your grandmother’s unique pieces from the closet because the 60’s are making a comeback! From midi dresses and skirts to mini-skirts and knee-high boots, it’s looking like a pretty groovy autumn.
It’s going to be a Mod Fall with designers embracing high-neck sweaters, swinging patterns, A-line skirts, and a pretty cool color palette — from threads to make-up.
Here are my top 5 60’s-inspired pieces you’ll need:
1. A mustard knit dress –
You’re probably thinking – mustard? Really? Yes! It’s a rich autumn color – think about pumpkin spice lattes and you’ll see what I mean. Secondly, it’s a really versatile color and can be paired with browns, blacks, bright reds and other patterns. As for the texture – knit screams Fall and it’s also a fashion-rewind to the dresses that were popular in the 60’s.
2. Did someone say mini-skirt? –
Is it just me or was clothing a little sexier back in the 60’s? Sexy doesn’t mean showing off too much skin, but just the right amount of leg. Dig out your mini-skirts because you’ll definitely need them. Pair them with knee high socks and a wicked magnum heel – it’ll be school-girl meets Mod.
3. Colorblock EVERYTHING –
Summer called for bright, fluorescent color block dresses and skirts. Fall trends have us craving the same patterns but with darker, richer colors. Invest in a short, high-collar colorblock dress. Don’t be afraid to wear a turtleneck this Fall and to spice it up, why not make it a colorblock one?
4. Sky-high boots & pointy flats –
As seen on the runway – Louis Vuitton featured knee-high shiny leather boots which are a must this Fall. Pointy flats also made a return on the haute-couture runways, putting a modern twist on a classic shoe. Suede and leather are in high demand this fall – from skirts to dresses to boots and shoes. Spend some extra cash and get a piece that will not only be trendy this autumn but for seasons to come.
5. Midi Ruffle Skirts –
Sometimes ruffles can get a little chaotic depending how you wear them. Valentino showcased some beautiful brown, leather ruffle skirts during his Fall fashion shows which had us all drooling. If you’re going to pull off a ruffle piece make sure the rest of your outfit is prim and slick. Consider a bright ruffle skirt – red, orange, or yellow and pair it with either a high-neck sweatshirt belted at the waist for an hourglass shape or with a classic fitting top. The midi length is perfect for Fall, especially on those chiller days where you don’t want to show off too much leg.
