Two years have gone by since “Rebelle” (War Witch), the breakout film about child soldiers, made it at the 85th Academy Awards as Canada’s entry in the Best Foreign Language Film category. While Montreal Canadian director Kim Nguyen walked the red carpet with his cast, Josa Maule, his casting director, was watching the gala from home, hoping for a win.
“Unfortunately, I was lying down in a hospital bed the night of the Oscars. Otherwise, I would have been with the actors on the red carpet”, shared Josa. “My first thoughts were gratitude prayer. Thank you Lord for giving me the strength to do what I love and the opportunity to work on this project”.
Making an award-winning movie requires the perfect recipe of cast, crew, story and location, and being a casting director is much like being a match-maker between the production and the actors who will bring those characters to life. Josa Maule has received numerous awards over the years for her contribution to the arts and acting community by Alliance Quebec, Woman of Merritt, and BHM City of Montreal. Working as a Casting Director on numerous Independent and local film projects, many of them have received international film festival awards and nominations.
“Rebelle” (War Witch) was one of Josa’s most successful casting, her little pride and joy while watching actors Rachel Mwanza, Alain “Lino” Bastien and Mizinga Mwinga share the screen in this 12 times nominated and 36 times award winning feature, based on true stories. Known as the owner of the Montreal School of Performing Arts (MSOPA), and casting director at Bruno Rosato Agency, Josa Maule has been a respected force in Montreal’s growing acting community. Over the years, MSOPA has mentored over five thousand actors and hundreds of filmmakers and playwrights, and the number continues to grow. After an Oscar nomination and a Canadian Screen Awards big win for her cast, what more can a casting director wish for?
“I continue to educate, challenge mentor, and inspire… love the art!!!! We have a few projects we are working stay in touch and stay tuned!” she shared.
Now, it is no secret to us that Josa Maule is one of the most passionate and caring women in the film industry, always looking out for her newbies, collaborators and former acting students. I had the chance to work with her and observe how she proceeds in choosing the right cast for the right role. I couldn’t help but wonder: What does it take for an actor to make it on the big screen?
“Like any profession you need to train, no quick fixes…no add water and stir… training is important, doing theatre, student and independent films, networking is also important.
There are no secrets, everyone has a different journey, when you do what you really love and you are truthful to yourself, all you can do…is the best you! What is meant to be will be!”, replied Josa.
Well, to all aspiring actors and actresses in Montreal, there is only one obstacle that is standing between you and your dream, and if you look into the mirror, you’re looking right at it. Josa Maule is one of the most influential woman in the Montreal film community, and her remarkable contributions to filmmaking and acting has helped thousands of actors, such as the cast of “Rebelle” (War Witch) to grow as the true artist that they are. If you’re in the Atwater neighborhood, come say hi!
