Montreal Times pet of the week – Meet Grandma Millie the Shepherd
Grandma Millie the Shepherd – Grandma Millie the shepherd is a German Shepherd mix and about to celebrate her 12th birthday with the DiGregos family who adopted her when she was just 6 weeks old. A friend told them about a German Shepherd who had given birth to a litter of six pups under the back stairs of her neighbour’s home, but for some reason had abandoned them.
“My friend’s neighbour discovered them when they were no more than 3-4 weeks old… she thinks the mother must have been killed or went away and died… unfortunately four of the pups had died, but two survived and she took them in and nurtured them,” said Angela.
Being dog lovers, they went to see the pups right away and their hearts were smitten.
“As soon as we saw her we knew right away we would take her in. My friend took the other pup, but sadly it died just a week later. Our dog Billie had died about a year before and we weren’t really ready for another one… but she seemed to be a gift, an angel of sorts I guess, so we named her Millie.”
Millie had some health issues at first, but with loving care she managed to grow into a healthy adult dog. She’s given them much joy over the years, but now she is ‘an old girl’ and has slowed down quite a bit.
“Although she is a mix, she inherited the typical problem with her hips that a lot of shepherds get… it’s hard for her to get around and well, she is actually very old for her kind… it’s why we now call her Grandma Millie.”
The DiGregos family are fully committed to making sure the last years of her life are as comfortable as possible and they have adapted areas of the house for her.
“She needs to pee a lot and can’t hold it in the way she used to, so at night or when we have to go out for just a short while and nobody can watch her, we have an extra room where we covered the floor with some plastic sheeting and put disposable padding on top… she likes the room and stays in there a lot.”
Grandma Millie holds a special place in their hearts – and will surely be cared for with love and compassion until she is ready to say goodbye.
