Montreal’s Burlesque Festival: Review
By Chloë Bellande – mtltimes.ca
Champagne clinks, laughter and cheers tickled my ears as I was sitting in the front row, waiting for the show to begin. The Montreal Burlesque Festival hosted their 6th edition at the Club Soda on St-Laurent, with a 3-night show, charming the audience one number at a time. A bevy of beautiful renowned burlesque artists performed on stage, including the ravishing Scarlett James, president and founder of the festival, who premiered a majestic and comical act, which the audience couldn’t get their eyes off of.
For its 6th edition, the festival presented an interesting mix of styles with local and international performers from Québec, New York, Paris and all over the World. Burlesque being the musical art of striping clothes in a theatrical and comical number, the festival aimed to celebrate women, hence their theme “Vive La Femme!”
There wasn’t a minute of boredom during the two-hour show, interspersed with short breaks, which would give you enough time to snap a few pictures with your favourite performer, before they ran backstage. Each and every number was bold, sexy, fun and unique. The entire time I was sitting there, I felt like I was transported in Vegas, watching a show on the strip. My festival “coup de coeur” goes to Mlle L’oiseau, a lovely performer from Paris, France, who did an exotic and dazzling number. If any women didn’t appreciate the art of Burlesque after watching her performance, they never will.
The Montreal Burlesque Festival ended on Saturday October 18th, 2014, with a steamy and fun closing event, featuring a group act from New York, known as The Pink Chardonnays. Special thanks to Leeja Murphy from Agence Pink Marketing for inviting us!
