Profile: Katia Nikolajew – Bewolf Fashion
Entrepreneur, Designer and Blogger
By Alyssa De Rosa
As an avid fashion follower I look for people who inspire others through their designs, style and all around personality. I came across a very interesting woman on Instagram whose handle is “bewolffashion.” First thing that came to mind was, “What a peculiar name for a fashion blog,” and being the curious person I am, I started following her posts and personal blog. Not only is this woman a blogger but also a designer, and entrepreneur.
Meet Katia Nikolajew, a native Montrealer who is now the founder and designer of Bewolf Fashions. Katia began creating her own designs at a young age. Growing up in a house with two sisters and not having a lot of funds to purchase the latest clothing forced her to be creative with her clothing as a form of self-expression.
Before meeting Katia I was expecting the fashion-forward model from her posts, and I wasn’t disappointed. Wearing jeans, platform booties embellished with her own signature jewel designs, a striped nautical top and her arms taken over my silver hardware, I knew she was the real deal. Oh, I can’t forget her signature accessory: her famous hats, held in hand.
So how did Bewolf come to be?
She lived in the Cayman Islands for two years after marrying her husband and started a blog to keep her family and friends up to date with what was happening in her life and from that point it flourished into something greater – a business.
“Cayman Islands is beautiful and relaxed,” she explains. “But the fashion… isn’t happening,” she laughs. This inspired her to start her daily outfit posts and sell pieces of her clothing on the island. A move that eventually catapulted into a fast-paced career.
“Bewolf is an inspiration, a form of expression,” she explains. “It’s a way of inspiring others to do the same whether it be in fashion, art or their everyday lives.” Unlike most bloggers and designers, Katia doesn’t have a fashion role model per say. She doesn’t follow trends but rather shops in vintage stores, follows other bloggers and feeds off their positive vibes for inspiration. There is definitely a boho, gypsy, tribal influence in her clothing between the accessories and the eclectic colors, her style is shy from ordinary.
“I try to find what’s beautiful and unique in the ugliest pieces and transform them into my own.”
Katia is a graphic designer, a make-up artist and a stylist. Combined, these skills help her a lot in creating her brand and making it visible worldwide.
What’s behind a name?
“To me, Bewolf means power. It’s strong, animalesque and inspires you to be yourself and have fun with it. It’s all about having fun and doing what you love.”
At just 30-years-old, Katia is making a living off what she does. She currently has a Bewolf store in the Ritz Carlton in the Caymans and a store in Vienna. She buys and works with dozens of wholesalers to sell her pieces online and in-store. She’s young, driven, and talented and an inspiration to many women looking to make their passion into a business.
“Everything is flourishing, so eventually I would love to have my own store in Montreal with a loft-like studio. I also want to focus a bit more on my designs – accessories and jewelry and currently in the process of merging my blog and website to make it easier for readers and potential clients.”
