Romeo – A must stop for pizza
Romeo – After a long day of shopping on Mont-Royal street, I decided to treat my daughter, my niece and myself to a meal at Romeo’s Pizzeria. Although we did not have a reservation, and it was already busy, we were lucky to get seated with no wait by the window, and eager to look at the menus and make some decisions. First, something to drink: Elena opted for the virgin Mojito ($5), Charlotte asked for the homemade lemonade ($5), and I asked for a Negroni ($10). The drinks arrived swiftly, served with a homemade tapenade entrée with flatbread, which was a perfect serving for three.
We started with entrées to share: La Tomate ($10), a tomato, basil, and buffalo mozzarella roquette salad. This is a Italian classic and very simple recipe, but when it is made with fresh and superior quality ingredients, as was the case here, it is irresistible.. Our second choice was the Portobello ($8) entrée, which was my favourite: roasted Portabello slices served with a spicy ratatouille and roquette.
It was difficult to pick our main dishes, since there were quite a few original and tempting choices offered. We settled on the Penne with pesto and roasted vegetables ($14.50), the Vegetarian pizza ($14.75) and the Chèvre ($14) pizza. The pizzas were fantastic. Our favourite was the chèvre. Again with this dish, the cheese was of excellent quality, and it blended so well with the fresh fig. We also liked the vegetarian pizza, since all three of us loved caramelized onions, and the roasted vegetables were perfect.
The third dish was not what we expected, but this is because we had not fully read the menu description. We expected the typical punch most pestos offer, and this dish did not deliver. We did appreciate how our waiter saw our lack of enthusiasm and made a point of listening to us and commiserating. This kind of attention to the customer’s dining experience makes it more likely for people to come back and take a chance with a different item on the menu.
For dessert, we finally agreed on three choices: the Crême Brulée, the house Tiramisu and the Raspberry Glace. The crême brulee was hard to taste, since it involved trying to pry it out of my daughter’s vicegrip. She finally relented and shared it with us and we all declared it as our favourite since it was perfect. The raspberry dessert came in second place – it is a more refreshing and less-sweet option, for those who prefer fruit. The Tiramisu lacked moisture, though, and just did not have that addictive tension of both decadently rich and airy light that usually comes in each spoonful.
Overall, I would recommend Romeo for their excellent pizza, and look forward to returning and exploring other items on their varied menu.
