A sampling of happenings around Montreal

Over 300 people braved the unpredictable rainy weather on October 8 and gathered at the Dollard Civic Centre to officially launch the 17th annual fundraising campaign for West Island Community Shares (WICS). The participants ranged from representatives of the 38 charitable and community organizations that benefit from the money that WICS raises every year (and a total of $10 million has been distributed since 1998), as well as representatives from many of WICS’ corporate partners and sponsors, such as Pfizer, Pharmaprix, Merck, TD Bank, BMO, RBC and Banque Nationale.
The money that will be raised during the 2014-2015 campaign are done through donations and a series of major fundraising events, including their spaghetti lunch (which just raised over $107,000 last month), the BMO Thanksgiving dinner (which raised $54,000 last week), the auction of experiences scheduled for November 3, the annual Red and White Evening that’s scheduled for January 2015, and their annual golf tournament next summer. This year’s fundraising goal is $1.3 million.
“One in five West Islanders get help from different community organizations, and every year, 41,000 people in the West Island benefit from those organizations who are helped by West Island Community Shares,” said its Executive Director Caroline Tison. “They are people like you and I. And you, the organizations, do all the hard work in the trenches, making the lives of our fellow West Islanders much better.” Ms. Tison added that she wants to take on several new groups to be part of the WICS umbrella during the course of the campaign period.
“This is a call to action, in which we are counting on the generosity of West Island residents and the community to maintain and increase their support that is so needed in the West Island,” said Nada Nasreddine, who owns and operates Pharmaprix branches in Beaconsfield and Kirkland, and is serving as the new President of the West Island Community Shares board of directors.
As in previous years, the fundraising campaign launch concluded with a 2 km. walk by its 300 participants in the area that surrounds the civic centre. For more information about West Island Community Shares, go to www.communityshares.ca.

Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) or Crohn’s Disease, affects over 200,000 Canadians, especially young adults between the ages of 15 and 35 years of age, and 20 percent of those who are affected by this disease are children and teenagers.
In 1992, the McGill IBD Research Group was founded by certain members of the community so that financial support towards a cure for IBD would continue, as well as continue the work of the IBD research facilities at McGill University’s four main teaching hospitals, as well as help the quality of life of those who are diagnosed with IBD.
On October 29, the “Laugh Your Butt Off” fundraiser will take place at Locale 514, located at 5765 Pare, starting at 7 p.m. The event will feature Dr. Joe Schwarcz as guest speaker, who will talk about the diet and nutritional do’s and don’ts related to IBD. New York comic Ben Morrison, himself a Crohn’s sufferer, will perform at the event, and musical entertainment will be courtesy of The Dependables Band, with 19-year-old Samantha Maldoff as its lead singer.
Tickets are $250 for adults, $150 for people under 30 years of age. The goal for the evening is $150,000, which will benefit the McGill IBD Research Group’s ongoing mission of research and patient care. On the heels of its tremendous success with its previous production “Catch Me If You Can”, the Cote St. Luc Dramatic Society is holding two rounds of open auditions for its next production, a whodunit murder mystery comedy called “Haven’t Got A Clue”, on October 14 and 16 from 6 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. The auditions are open to all aspiring actors 17 years of age and older. Once the selection process is done, cast members are required to pay a membership fee of $115 and agree to do some fundraising by selling tickets to the show, as well as advertisement sales for the program book. Rehearsals will take place at Cote St. Luc City Hall on Tuesday and Thursday nights from 6 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. “Haven’t Got A Clue” will have a four-day run from February 12-15, 2015.

The SBC Gallery of Contemporary Art, located at 372 St. Catherine Street West, Suite 507, is presenting a unique exhibition that combines art, performance art and financial speculation. “M&A” (or “Mergers and Acquisitions”) features the Swedish duo of Goldin & Senneby, who will honour the memory of 18th century alchemist and anti-slavery activist August Nodrenskiold, who raised an enormous of gold in order to pursue his dream of finding the Philosopher’s Stone. For this exhibition, the duo is working with an investment banker and a computer scientist to develop an algorithmic trading model, which will be used to raise money through stock market investing for the exhibition’s production budget. Throughout that time, the gallery space will be used as a space for a series of revolving rehearsals of “M&A”. The exhibition and rehearsals will take place at the gallery from now until November 22, or until the trading budget runs out of funds. For more information, call 514-861-9992.

The art gallery of the Eleanor London Cote St. Luc Public Library, located at 5851 Cavendish Boulevard, will hold an exhibition of photographs by Montreal photographer Andre Boucher until November 23. The photos that will be featured in the exhibition are taken from six different series, and each one has the distinct feature of not being altered or retouched by digital or other technological means. Also, Boucher will be present at the gallery on opening night, September 30, for a special Meet the Artist event starting at 7 p.m. Admission is free of charge.
