Montreal Jazz festival 2017 – The free concerts

Sergio Martinez – mtltimes.ca

Montreal Jazz Festival 2017 – The time when you walk from one corner of the Quartier des spectacles to another, and you are moving from traditional jazz to some funk, to Afro, or Latin rhythms, depending on what stage is near, will be here soon. The free outdoor program of the 38th edition of the Montreal Jazz Festival 2017 was announced this Tuesday and, as usual, it will offer an eclectic showcase of what we may appropriately call urban music (since in fact, the Festival is much more than jazz). The Montreal Jazz festival 2017 starts on June 28 and will conclude on July 8. The popular outdoor concerts will take place on six stages located in the area of the Place des Arts and named after the Jazz Fest’s main sponsors, plus two indoor venues that are also presenting free shows, although there you’ll have to buy a drink (the Astral and the Savoy du Métropolis).

This year there will be four major free outdoor events, all of them at the main stage (TD Stage) on the Place des Festival at Jeanne Mance and Maisonneuve. The first giant event is scheduled for June 28 starting at 5 p.m. (it will also be on the Rio Tinto Stage, at the corner of Ste. Catherine and Jeanne-Mance) and its details are going to be known later. This event will also be a celebration of Montreal’s 375th anniversary.

Laurent Saulnier, V.P. Programming, announcing the Canada Day special event

On July 1, Canada Day, the Jazz Festival will join the happy occasion with what the organizers describe as “a one-of-a-kind celebration of the anniversary of Canada, the Place des Festivals is transformed into a gigantic open-air dance floor.” The event has been aptly named Discotheque Canada 150 and will start at 9:30 p.m. Scheduled to participate in this massive dancing event are Carly Rae Jepsen, Men Without Hats, Radio Radio, Muzion, and Buffalo Hat Singers. The show will also include 24 musicians, 5 singers, 35 dancers, wild projections, surprises and a fireworks display.

Walk off the Earth is a quintet with a very original approach to music: major event on July 4

One of the most exciting bands with many original features, Walk off the Earth, will be performing on July 4 at 9:30 p.m. The last of these major free concerts will also be the closing event, on July 8. According to the organizers, “singer, rapper, drummer and newly crowded R&B prince Anderson .Paak arrives with his remarkable group The Free Nationals to close out the Festival with a deep groove experience that is likely to imprint its very own chapter in Festival history.”

Other free concerts that seem particularly interesting are the ones featuring Betty Bonifassi presenting contemporary interpretations of slave songs (July 2), The Brooks, a Montreal group (July 6), all of them at the TD Stage with two shows, at 9 p.m. and 11 p.m.

Polly Gibbons, a young British jazz singer (July 2)

Also interesting are these artists, Tami Neilson, from New Zealand, who fuses gospel, blues, rockabilly, country and soul (June 29). Polly Gibbons, an elegant British jazz singer (July 2). Aubrey Logan an American singer who is a member of the Postmodern Jukebox Collective (July 4), all these shows are at the Rio Tinto Stage (Ste. Catherine and Jeanne-Mance).

As usual, the outdoor settings of the Jazz Festival include activities for children and young people, such as the Little School of Jazz in the Complexe Desjardins’ Grand Place, and the Musical Park with interactive devices for kids designed around the topic of music.

And last but not least, food and drinks from a variety of gastronomic traditions will be available in the numerous kiosks around the Place des Arts area.
