GYM-ZONE gives more value to your fitness dollar

“I believe this is the greatest for everybody,” says Glenn Herring. “Everybody should be training, exercising, eating well.”
Glenn likes to lead by example. He’s the owner of GYM-ZONE in Lasalle, and has been training for more than 35 years. Opening a gym for him was a manifest choice, as his passion can be traced back to his teenage years when he trained at the YMCA. He recalls proclaiming he would one day open his own gym, and so GYM-ZONE was born 24 years ago.
Herring’s dedication for staying in shape goes beyond the gym — he competes in the Canadian Natural Physique Championships (which he’s won an impressive six times) — and is definitely infectious. In fact, his entire team of trainers are not only certified, but are just as enthusiastic as he is when it comes to working out.
“I tend to hire people who have that passion too,” he says.
Sam Michael has been working at GYM-ZONE for 16 years. He’s Glenn’s “right-hand” man, but also a health and nutrition consultant. He makes working out more approachable, especially for newcomers, and his eagerness in helping people succeed is obvious.
“We gear your training towards your lifestyle and make it more fun,” says Sam. “We come to the gym to de-stress and to feel better about ourselves at the end of the work out.”
Glenn highlights the fact that the gym is also a place to develop better habits overall, not where you simply work out. Sam mentions that he always asks people how much they’re willing to invest in their health, and tries to make them understand and implement changes in their daily routines in order to maximize their results.
“As soon as you become self-aware, you tend to take better care of yourself,” he explains.
GYM-ZONE boasts 15,000 square feet, which is strategically divided into different sections. Cardio machines are set up in front of TVs at the front of the room, followed by machines to work out your chest, and upper body. Towards the back of the room are the leg machines, and along the left-hand side wall, the free-weights are set up.
There is a separate room for warming up and working out your abs, and just beyond two french doors in this room is the massotherapy office where you can relax and unwind after a rigorous workout.
“We give receipts!” laughs Sam, noting that if you’re insured, you can be refunded.
Near the entrance area, there is also a snack bar where you can grab a pre-workout meal or post-workout snack. This includes sandwiches, salads, smoothies, and protein bars. Without fail, you’ll be greeted by whoever happens to be working behind the counter that day.
The gym is very welcoming of all ages, skills, and fitness levels. By simply walking through the gym, you’ll see a variety of people. Glenn even tells me his mother who is in her 70s works out at GYM-ZONE too!
What makes GYM-ZONE is a success is not only their expertise but how they apply it when helping their members. There are no circuits, no lack of machine availability so you’re not idly standing around, proper guidance to ensure maximum benefits from your workout, and the trainers help create plans to make it easier for members to reach their goals.
“We make you feel good and look good, but the feeling comes first,” says Sam.
Glenn has seen in an increase in people working out since he opened his doors more than two decades ago, but he makes it clear GYM-ZONE is here for people who are serious about their health.
“If you’re serious about getting in shape and changing your health for the better, to feel better, and to live a better life, then GYM-ZONE is where you should be.”
GYM-ZONE is located at 8351 Newman Blvd. in Lasalle. They are open seven days a week, from 6 am to midnight Monday to Friday, and from 8 am to 9 pm on weekends.
