The debate is over. The town of Ile Perrot claims the prize for the best smoked meat around Montreal—Smoked Meat Pete’s has been open for twenty years and counting. Now, they are ready to celebrate.
Pete Varvaro, the owner, has literally been serving smoked meat his entire life. His family once owned The Main along St. Laurent. He helped his dad out at The Main for twenty years before opening his own smoked meat legacy just a few minutes from the city. The current location, recently renovated and ready to celebrate 20 years in business, is nestled just off of Highway 20 leading into Montreal.
Smoked meat lovers flock from not only across Quebec, but across the country to try Pete’s sandwiches time and again. Some diners have opted for Pete’s meat for literally years. Clearly, there’s a reason why his restaurant has won so many awards, including the prize for best smoked meat in 2014. “The Lord of the Fries” and “The Prince of Smoked Meat” are just a couple of the other fun titles Pete has received over the years.
Aside from the best smoked meat in the area, Pete’s also hosts live music seven days a week. Pete fills the dining space with jazz and blues played by local artists. Great music, friendly staff, and a family-oriented, small-town feel just moments from the city limits. Pete’s is a destination that is definitely worth the extra miles.
“It’s very rustic, we have an outside terrace that is heated,” said Melanie Booth, who has been a part of the business for twelve years now. Pete’s looks like a cabin from the outside. It’s street-facing terrace is the perfect place to hang out any night of the week. “It’s very bluesy. It’s smoked meat, but like a steak house.”
The 20-year celebration starts on Saturday, September 17th, and features two special performances. Smokin’ Pete & Hawk Power Hour from 6 to 9pm, then Guy Belanger & Adam Karch take the stage from 10pm to midnight. “Guy Belanger is one of the best blues bands in the city,” said Pete.
Early risers and early diners can head over before the music starts—they open bright and early at 9am every day. The rest of September’s lineup is stacked as well, if you can’t make it for the big party. If you haven’t been to Smoked Meat Pete’s before, arrive early and arrive hungry. They accept cash, Visa and Mastercard.
Pete thanks his late parents, Julia Santini and Peter Varvaro, for his success: “My dad gave me the experience, and my mom gave me her help.” He also thanks Melanie Booth, and his son, the youngest Peter, for all of their help in the restaurant. “And to my customers, thank you for the 20 years of successful business.”
