Fahim & Malek Pharmacy (FMP) in Dorval is a newly-opened facility seeking customers and offering personalized services. While part of the Uniprix chain, FMP is a smaller store that actually feels like a pharmacy—not a grocery store–and the main focus here is on prescription medications.
“I work here with one partner and one technician,” explains head pharmacist Rafik Malek “This month we will be joined by a dietician. All of this affords for an unhurried atmosphere with personalized services and offering the time to discuss individual cases. We can review cases and profiles. Other pharmacies elsewhere often have thousands of customers and it can be very difficult for the pharmacist to know or talk to all of these people.”
There are many pharmacies in Dorval, but FMF is competitive. “Prices on prescription medications, of course, are regulated and the same everywhere. But our over-the-counter (OTC) prices here are lower than those of nearby pharmacies. And for customers on private insurance; we can adjust our dispensing fees,” notes Malek
“Some people still don`t realize how important good communication is with their pharmacist. Doctors are the experts on bodies and on disease, but pharmacists are the experts on medications. And we are typically much more accessible than doctors; you can often just walk in without an appointment and talk to us.”
Malek points out also that pharmacists do much, much more than simply dispense pills. They can also spot bad interactions between different medications and sometimes even with food. “For instance, patients taking Lipitor, a medication for reducing blood cholesterol, are advised that eating grapefruit and some other citrus fruits can have adverse interactions with Lipitor.”
“For new customers from other pharmacies, it is easy to request that their files be forwarded here; the transfer is simple”
Malek offers in-store hypertension and blood pressure measurement, together with consultation. He also offers diabetes and blood sugar testing, together with consultations; also offered is nicotine replacement therapy.
Free parking is available on Lakeshore and other nearby streets in Dorval. The pharmacy is also accessible by the STM bus 191. “Apart from services to walk-in customers, we also offer free deliveries for Dorval, western Lachine, and eastern Pointe Claire. And we take telephone orders in English, French, or Arabic.”
The pharmacy is open from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. weekdays, except Friday when it closes at 5 p.m. On both Saturday and Sunday, the hours are 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
