The Honorary Consul of Jamaica in Montreal is promoting and seeking sponsorship for the concert and activities of the National Youth Orchestra of Jamaica (NYOJ). The concert tour on August 8, 2014 will take place at the Oscar Peterson Concert Hall, 7141 Sherbrooke West, Montreal, Quebec at 7 pm. It is in celebration of Jamaica’s 52nd year of independence.
Support is solicited to promote and fund this initiative. The aim here is to empower these youths to excel and profit from this extraordinary experience. It is hoped that it will instill in them the desire to reach beyond their current circumstances , as well as to bring this positive mentality back to their communities and inspire others.
The NYOJ’s first training centre opened in January 2010 in Kingston, Jamaica at the St. Andrew Technical High School. Youths at-risk, ages 10-18 years are recruited from the surrounding communities. These include St. Alban’s Primary, St. Andrew Primary and Technical High School, Denham Town Primary & Comprehensive High School, Trench Town High School and Tivoli Gardens Comprehensive High School. Another centre has since been opened at Kingston College which draws students from the surrounding area and is very well attended. Classes are divided into instrument sections, orchestra rehearsals and choral training.
The benefits of orchestral instruction have long been recognized for the discipline and determination it instills in the students. It is also praised for the very positive effect it has on concurrent education. It is hoped that musical training will improve the social landscape of the island, decrease intellectual divide, provide opportunities for self-advancement and transform the lives of the participants.
Help us to encourage these gifted musicians and world citizen in this noteworthy endeavour.
Tickets to the event are $25 in advance and $30 at the door.
