’77 and Heavy Montréal Weekend – What not to miss !

’77 & Heavy Montréal : First of the ”Festival Trio”

Festival season is upon us – for the next three weekends, Parc Jean-Drapeau will be under siege by thousand of fans roaring their musical crush. Heavy Montréal is officially opening the ball that’s leading to Osheaga and île Sonic and we are already overwhelmed with this first one line-up.

Every year since 2008, the once-named Heavy MTL has delivered exactly what it’s promising : A hard overdose of energy, satanic fuses and lots of bands to discover.

After a one year hiatus in 2017, Heavy Montréal returned in 2018 stronger and louder than before, despite the headliner, Avenged Sevenfold, cancelling at the  last minute. Praise the organizer’s magic for managing a last minute booking with Limp Bizkit. Even if that gave us an amazing and notorious performance,  we hope none of that magic will be necessary again.

Returning to a newly reconstructed site and with a new layout, this year magic is already there and built-in within the massive line-up the organization is offering.

The festival is blessed again with this year headliner : Legendary band Slayer –  playing their last show in Quebec.  Their cult status should be enough to convince you that this is an absolute must – especially since they are calling it a day. Don’t worry,  no other band are scheduled at the same time as Slayer, but unfortunately that’s not the case for the others performances – including Ghost’s only  summer festival show in North America, Evanescence, Godsmack and Slash.

Here is what you need to know before ascending into Heavy Montreal lair and make the most of this weekend.

First, for those of you that extended the 2-day festival into a long 3-day music bash- there’s even more conflicts and bands ”you don’t know about”. The underground punk festival ’77  happening this Friday, on the 26th, will unite even more veterans and talents to set the mood to the weekend.

Straight on Parc Jean-Drapeau ground, ’77  is the perfect way to start our descent into hell. Get your Weekend Warrior passes online for 225$. The three-day COMBO pass allows you to attend both festivals and mosh all weekend .

Line Up for 77′ Montreal – Friday June 26 th
What not to miss at 77′ Montreal

Bad Religion is the first headliner of the weekend. Planning a return to Montreal in 2020 for their 40th Anniversary tour, you still don’t want to miss a chance to see them in this outdoor scenery. The Punk rock American band, known for their lyrics and controversial topics, just released an album. Their set is promising the original classic performed with the same energy and spirit… but they are even more excited to play the new stuff – Listen to Age of Unreason  – Here.

Another veteran you won’t want to miss – Pennywise – At this point, three decades since the band’s DIY beginnings, Pennywise classics like “Same Old Story,” “Fuck Authority,” “Alien,” “Homesick,” and “Bro Hymn” are as fundamental to punk rock and hardcore as stage dives and guitars. The band always include a few random covers in their set-list which make every set unique and worth singing with.

There are plenty of bands that would be worth the day by themselves. Streetlight Manifesto guarantee impromptus tics of ska-punk and dancing with their horns and about 8 other instruments. Self-made band, Wavves, return to Montreal is also strongly fueling our hype.  The indie band that surf from alternative rock to punk rock is going to be the perfect mid-day set and it will be extremely satisfying

Finally, Charly Bliss is going to be a sweet change, bringing a little touch of femininity in a otherwise masculine roster.  Pre scout the band : Fours year strong and Montréal’s band, Gutter Demons for more rock band. If you are looking for a authentic punk experience or pure rebellious energy take a look at  Bigwig,  The Exploited and supergroup Off!

10 things not to miss at  HEAVY MONTREAL

METALACHI –  The world first and ONLY  heavy metal mariachi band will be performing this Sunday on July 28.  If this didn’t already get your attention and curiosity – This will be theirs first time playing in Canada and Heavy Montreal will most likely be Metalachi biggest crowd of the summer. Their energy coming straight from the south and the obvious entertainment effect surrounding them will be worth checking out.

CLUTCH – Maryland rockers Clutch have been pushing the boundaries of heavy rock music since the 4 original members got together in high school. Having been tagged hard rock, blues rock, southern stoner rock and alternative metal by media and fans across the world it is safe to say one thing… “What you see is what you get” and what you get is a musical force that has been best described as the quintessential American Rock Band.  The band has shared stages with Lamb of God to Iron Maiden, Primus to Thin Lizzy, Mastodon to Motörhead. What has come of it is a cult-like International fan base, not to mention praise from all corners of the music world. From amazing guitar to powerful verse this is a show we highly recommend !

Dirty Honey – The Los Angeles rock band just recently released their debut EP, produced by Nick DiDin (pearl Jam, Rage Against the Machine) and they are gearing up for an ambitious 2019. They have a non-stop touring scheduled – As NPR music said about the band : ”Don’t believe anyone if they tell you ‘Rock is dead’ . Dirty Honey Rocks in the best possible way”.

Bringing back inspiration from many golden-age and reviving sounds that were thought to be lost, Dirty Honey is not even trying to bring anything back. ” We just want to make music that’s sexy and hard and rocking all at the same time” – Dirty Honey ‘s singer : Marc Labelle

3TEETH – Is born out of a synthesis of visual art, inventive thought and unconventional music. few industrial act in the past three years has experienced the same level of crossover success as 3TEETH. Opening  for Tool in 2016 cemented their mainstream appeal, and established them as circuit headliner. 3TEETH use corrosive rhythms, acerbic samples, blazing guitars and a confrontational polemic to inspire listeners to question the ideologies that we hold sacred. It’s the same kind of musical activism sparked by groups like MC5 in the ‘60s and reignited in the ‘90s by Rage Against the Machine.

HEAVY MANIA – Heavy Mania is back with the biggest production the festival has ever seen, located right next to the iconic Calder ”Trois Disques” statue. Professional wrestlers will battle it out in an insanely entertaining show you have to see to believe! Coming at you like an extinction level event, Heavy Mania is going to shake your world to its very core! Over the course of two days, Heavy Mania will infect you with the virus of violence, quicken your pulse like quicksilver, and inject adrenaline straight into your icy veins with hardcore professional wrestling. Featuring the stars of the International Wrestling Syndicate like The Green Phantom, Sexxxy Eddy, Tabarnak De Team, and plenty more, Heavy Mania originally put Montreal wrestling on the map, but this time we’re about to light the whole map on fire.

GODSMACK is coming back to deliver a set of their explosive hard rock classics. EVANESCENCE will perform at Heavy for the first time, led by iconic front-woman Amy Lee. SLASH FEATURING MYLES KENNEDY & THE CONSPIRATORS will be turning it to 11 for their first-ever performance at the festival, and ANTHRAX will be back to give fans an adrenaline-soaked show from one of metal’s legendary BIG FOUR.

The Summer Slaughter Tour is coming through on Saturday, with CATTLE DECAPITATION, CARNIFEX, THE FACELESS, RIVERS OF NIHIL, NEKROGOBLIKON and more! Perfect to satisfy the ones in need of screams.

Montréal has always been known as a haven for heavy music, and now Montreal’s city council unanimously adopted a declaration which states that Montreal is a “city of excellence” for heavy metal! Let’s celebrate local talent at Heavy with performances by KATAKLYSM (performing their first Montreal show since Heavy 2016), DESPISED ICON (celebrating the 10th anniversary of their album Day of Mourning), DOPETHRONE, THE GREAT SABATINI, and MOUNTAIN DUST.

Just added ANONYMUS to the festival lineup, to celebrate their 30thanniversary at HEAVY!

Finally, Montreal band JUNKOWL will open the show on the BLABBERMOUTH Forest Stage after beating out almost 200 other bands to win En Route Vers Heavy, a battle of the bands that began with online submissions and continued with 7 amazing live concerts.

The lineup of amazing bands will deliver incredible performances all weekend long – but of course, HEAVY MONTRÉAL is renowned for an unparalleled festival experience, and this year is bringing some exciting new components to discover!

Hope to see you in the Pit
