21 Year old singer ZIM lived in foster care for half of her life and won a radio contest to record this project. Now speaking up for others, this Talented Puerto Rican artist have quite a story to tell.
Harlem-based independent singer and songwriter ZIM announced that her new debut EP ‘Sylmar’ will be released next month. In celebration, she shared the first song from the project, “ZIM”. Produced by BHB, the track features ZIM’s own blend of R&B with pop & hip-hop sensibilities and highly emotive songwriting.
The song is rooted in linking past lovers to mary jane references : “The inspiration behind the song ‘Zim’ is just weed literally, the 21-year-old Puerto Rican creative explained to VIBE VIVA in an interview. “I got high when I wrote it, which is one way I can create. I like singing about emotions and in this song I enjoyed comparing the men I’ve been with through my life to certain weed strains and how they made me feel.”
At only 21 years old, ZIM has already lived well beyond her years with a life filled with great pain and struggle. She was in out of foster care for half of her youth and to this day is living on and off the streets of New York. The child of an addict father who witnessed the mistreatment of mother and who endured abuse herself, ZIM has experienced a large amount of pain and music has always been a way for her to escape her circumstances.
The Harlem native has seen her fair shares of ups and downs, but hasn’t allowed it be a burden on the path to her dreams. “I really don’t express regrets. Any situation I was in became a life lesson for me,” she said. Instead, she’s used her life path as inspiration in her music. “That’s how I get my inspiration to record music.,” she said. “Every song is a true story of what I’ve been through.”
She was discovered singing at a Harlem house party by her now managers (who founded Mandalae Worldwide) not long ago who were drawn in by her powerful voice. She later won a series of studio sessions from a local NY radio station where she recorded this new Sylmar project. Fully self taught and writing since she was a small child, she creates from a place of a pure authenticity and raw emotion. “[I’m] determined to make an impact in music,” she added. “This is all “I” have.
Filled with 808s and quiet storm allure, Zim makes a space R&B hasn’t felt in quite a while.” – VIBE
