Laval resident, Barbara Schaper first got the fitness bug at the age of 13 when she began training in the gym.
Fluent in French, and Portuguese, Brazilian born Schaper trains at Centre Sportif Rosemere, where she also doubles up as an instructor, where her potential as a bikini model was immediately recognized.
“I met fit and amazing bikini athletes that I always admired. I’ve always considered bikini competition like a dream, a challenge, and something impossible for me,” said Schaper.
With the backing of her family, Schaper began training with her boyfriend, Jean-Phillip Asselin, with sponsorship from Fit Menu, (www.fitmenu.com) in guiding towards her goal of competing nationally.
Schaper trains six days a week, with each training session lasting up to 90 minutes. A different body part is focused each time.
Coach Julie Royer has a big role in her life as she takes the lead in her daily calorie count to affect her metabolism before competition.
“Barbara is not only an accomplished athlete, she is disciplined and easy to guide. She is strong and sensible and demonstrates empathy and generosity.
She has a heart of gold, and we learn much from knowing her,” said Royer.
Schaper sleeps eight hours a day, and eats six meals a day. There are sacrifices amongst friends and family in following such a tight regiment.
There is a 12 week prep time before competition, and her target heading into competition is to get down to 10%-12% body fat.
Chocolate is my weakness. I am allowed to have it once a week,” a playful Schaper told The Montreal Times.
The budget for a bikini competition is $1,500.00 which includes make-up and wardrobe Schaper’s inaugural showing had her winning a bronze at The Quebec Open on April 7, 2013.
“My goal is to obtain my pro card, and to compete at the national level, “It is a lifestyle which I can continue as long as the fire still burns,” a vibrant Schaper exhibited as she left her seat on her way to another training session.”
