Montreal Canadiens acquire Christian Folin and Dale Weise from Philadelphia
David Schlemko and Byron Froese are traded to the Flyers; Folin will join the Canadiens, while Weise will report to the AHL’s Laval Rocket
Montreal Canadiens general manager Marc Bergevin announced on Saturday that the team has acquired defenseman Christian Folin and forward Dale Weise from the Philadelphia Flyers in return for David Schlemko and Byron Froese.
Folin, 27, has participated in 26 games thus far this season with Philadelphia, recording two assists, 16 penalty minutes, 60 hits and a +5 differential. The 6’03” and 204 lbs defenseman is averaging 15:33 of ice time per game.
In 209 career NHL regular season games with Minnesota, Los Angeles and Philadelphia since his debut in 2013-14, Folin has recorded 38 points (7 goals, 31 assists) and 96 penalty minutes. A native of Gothenburg, Sweden, he has a +21 differential. Folin appeared in six career NHL playoff games.
The 30-year-old Weise has played 42 games thus far this season with Philadelphia, registering 11 points (5 goals, 6 assists). He scored one of his goals while shorthanded and added one game-winning tally. He is averaging 12:08 of ice time per game, has recorded 67 hits and served 15 penalty minutes. Weise added two points (1-1-2) in three contests with Lehigh Valley (AHL).
The 6’02” and 206 lbs forward has played 481 career NHL regular season games since his debut in 2010-11. Weise suited up for New York (Rangers), Vancouver, Montreal (59 points in 152 games), Chicago and Philadelphia. A native of Winnipeg, he has recorded 120 points (54 goals, 66 assists), including eight game-winning goals, and 335 penalty minutes. Weise produced 11 points (6 goals, 5 assists) in 40 NHL playoff contests.
Acquired in a trade from Vegas on June 22, 2017, Schlemko recorded two assists in 18 games with the Canadiens in 2018-19. The 6’01” and 191 lbs defenseman added four points (1 goal, 3 assists) in eight matchups with Laval.
Signed as a free agent on July 1, 2017, Froese was leading the Rocket with 14 goals. The 6’01” and 196 lbs forward added 16 assists for 30 points. He was named the first captain in Rocket history.
