Marko Viljanac, 13, was found underwater in the pool of the family’s apartment building on July 16th 2014. His parents who are unable to swim cried for help and while the young sister watched, the two rescuers, both building’s employees, pulled the unconscious teenager out of the pool and carried out cardiopulmonary resuscitation procedures until the paramedics arrived.
Luis Jorge Lafaurie and Ricardo Meneses Cubides, who acted promptly, saved a life and protected a family from psychological trauma. Sun Youth wishes to acknowledge those who choose to help instead of ignoring someone in need. Every minute, every second can make a difference.
Rewarding citizens for their courage and solidarity fosters altruism and develops mutual care. Since 2001, 58 people have been recognized through Sun Youth’s Good Samaritan program.
