Montreal comic Eman El-Husseini will soon pull up stakes and make the move to New York City in order to take her stand-up comedy career to the next level.
But before she makes that move to that high-pressure entertainment hub, Eman will tape a live solo comedy special on November 4 at Club Soda on St. Laurent Boulevard starting at 8 p.m. Joining Eman for the taping are recent Nasty Show host Mike Ward and UN war crimes lawyer-turned-comic Jess Salomon.
“This will be the third time I’m taping one of my solo stand-up shows, and this one will be more like a farewell to my fans in Montreal,” she said during a recent phone interview.
Born in Kuwait and raised in Montreal, Eman started her comedy career in 2006, and started out taking acting classes, but when she discovered she was better at making people laugh than having them take her seriously as an actress, she decided on the comedy route. However, it was after sustaining serious injuries in a car accident that prompted her to take to the comedy stage.
“After that car accident, and ending up being close to dying, I decided that life was too short, and pushed myself to do what I really wanted to do, which was to be a comedian,” she said.
From there, Eman has performed across Canada, the U.S. and the Middle East, not to mention appearances at the Just For Laughs festival, the CBC radio program “The Debaters”, the annual cross-cultural comedy show “Kosher Jokes for the Halaladays” (which she served as its co-producer), and her recently-launched podcast “Unheard Of: Sex, Religion and Politics at the Dinner Table”. Eman believes her style of comedy is used to bridge the gap between different groups of people at a time when there are serious divisions, not to mention celebrate how people are so different.
“Look at me, I’m a walking, breathing contradiction … I’m a Muslim, part Iranian and I’m married to a Jewish woman,” she said. “I’m not here to offend with my comedy, I’m here to entertain people, and the topics that I tackle with my stand-up routines are those kind of topics that people are too scared to approach in real life.”
Tickets for the live comedy show taping at Club Soda on November featuring Eman, Mike ward and Jess Salomon are $33.50 each, and can be purchased by calling 514-286-1010 or online at: www.clubsoda.ca .
