The Women’s Y Foundation (YWCA) announces the appointment of its new chair, Sophie Fortin, following a unanimous vote by the board of directors at its meeting of September 21, 2015. Ms. Fortin is a high-profile leader in the field of human resources and communications.
In 2013, Ms. Fortin co-presided the annual fundraising gala held and organized by the Foundation, the Women of Distinction Awards Evening. She was later appointed to the board of directors in December 2014. As the Board’s new chair, she succeeds the outgoing Anne Mezei, who has served on the Board since 2008.
Until May 2015, Ms. Fortin served as Senior Vice-President, People, Business Change, and Communications, at Standard Life, where she also sat on the Executive Committee and the Global Executive People Committee.
Ms. Fortin enters her new assignment filled with enthusiasm about the challenges ahead: “For the past twenty years, the Foundation, through its fundraising activities, has supported the YWCA Montreal to fulfill its mission of offering new paths to women and girls. To continue providing programs and services that make such a remarkable a difference in the lives of these Montrealers, the Foundation will renew its funding strategies by adapting to philanthropic trends and establishing the basis for long-lasting growth. With the help of other Board members and Foundation staff I am determined to achieve these goals,” she said.
Since 1875, YWCA Montreal has been working to improve the lives of women and girls by increasing their skills, self-esteem and autonomy; encouraging their personal growth; and preventing all forms of violence. The organization is working to build a better future for women and girls in a just society where women and girls have the power and opportunity to realize their full potential.
