The Hudson Country Homes Tour – Elizabeth Currie felt like she was on another cycling tour in the South of France when she came out to last year’s Hudson Country Homes Tour. She took the train from the Vendome station in Montreal to Vaudreuil, then rode to Hudson and to each of the houses on the tour. Not wanting to wait for the next train, she returned by bicycle all the way home that afternoon, admitting that 100 kilometers is a bit much! And, she recommends getting off at the Dorion station in order to follow the more bicycle-friendly and scenic lake road all the way out to Hudson.
Elizabeth was so taken with the homes it made her want to move to Hudson! The range and contrast of homes resulted in a nice mix that reflected each of their owners. Nothing escaped her eye, including the flower arrangements that in one home picked up on the colours in their gorgeous rugs. She also found the volunteers to be well informed about the houses they were sitting, and very welcoming. In her view, it is truly a socially-engaging activity as well as an opportunity to learn, acquire great decorating ideas or be inspired to dream at the very least.
Elizabeth will never forget the delicious lunch at St. James’ Church, where she was welcomed, even dressed in bike shorts, and treated to an extra serving of roast beef in deference to her physically demanding mode of transportation! She claims that by bicycling one not only increases their appetite but their sense of taste will be enhanced too. She also recommends indulging on the amazing selection of desserts, without feeling guilty!
She highly recommends that Tour participants consider, if not cycling out to Hudson, then to bring their bicycles by car, park their cars at St. James’ Church from where they will be able to visit each of the 5 homes on Thursday, June 7th in relative proximity – mostly all along Main Road – by bicycle in an environmentally friendly and healthy way.
