Westwood High School
Hundreds of students at the Lester B. Pearson School Board’s Westwood High School, Sr. Campus wore white to school after learning of the passing of South African leader Nelson Mandela last week. Using social media they quickly spread the word as soon as they heard of the death of the freedom fighter who after 27 years of imprisonment, became South Africa’s first elected black president and who brought an end to apartheid. This was their way of paying respect to the world leader. Mandela has had a huge impact on the students whose Bridge to Burundi project, which through student efforts, has seen the rebuilding of a war-torn East African village, including a school, medical centre, water supply and more. The Bridge to Burundi project is largely based on Mandela’s belief that education is the most powerful weapon you can use to change the world.
