Montreal heat wave on the way AGAIN

Cooling-of-in-Front-of-Fans-Medical-News-Today-min-1

Montreal heat wave – Just as Montrealers were starting to feel a little cooler and breathing sighs of relief, several more extreme, hot and humid days are on their way for this weekend – which should start kicking in this Friday July 13th, peaking on Sunday and Monday. After an extended, record-breaking heat wave blasted its way like a furnace into the city last week, forecasters are calling for temperatures hovering around the low to mid 30’s – and humidity levels that could reach as high 40C. Yes, Montreal heat wave on the way, again.

It will not be as extreme nor as long as the last heat wave, which to date has been connected to 74 deaths in Quebec, that includes 34 in Montreal – but it will be brutal enough for those still recovering from the stress it put on their health.

Remember to keep hydrated and take measures that will keep you and your loved ones safe and healthy. This is just as important for your pets as well – and if you know of any people, especially the elderly who might be living alone, please take the time to check in on them to make sure they have what they need to keep cool and comfortable.

KEEP COOL – BE SMART

-If you have an air conditioner make sure it is operating properly. Fans as well. Otherwise, you can also head out to a place nearby, like a shopping mall, library and an indoor pool or even go see a movie inside an air-conditioned theatre where you can spend a few hours and cool off. You can also take a cool shower or bath. It can make a big difference.

– Prepare meals ahead of time so you do not have to use your oven. Buying some prepared meals can also help.

– Keep your windows covered with curtains or blinds during the day.

STAY HYDRATED!
-Drink plenty of water (or add some natural fruit juice to it) even if you do not feel thirsty to avoid the risk of dehydration.
– Eat fruits and vegetables that have a high water content. Watermelon is a great option.

– Make sure your pets have fresh water available at all times. Do not leave them outside for prolonged times, especially in direct sunlight. Do NOT leave them inside a parked car, even if it is just for a short period while you run in for some groceries.

SYMPTOMS OF HEAT STROKE

Heat Stroke can be very serious and you should pay close attention to how you and those around you might be reacting to the extreme conditions. Health Canada lists the symptoms of Heat Stroke as follows:

– Dizziness or fainting.

– Nausea or vomiting.

– Headache.

– Rapid breathing and heartbeat.

– Extreme thirst (dry mouth or sticky saliva) and decreased urination with unusually dark yellow urine.

– If you experience any of these symptoms during hot weather, immediately move to a cool place and drink liquids. Water is best.

– Heat stroke is a medical emergency. Call 911 or your local emergency number immediately if you are caring for someone, such as a neighbour, who has a high body temperature and is either unconscious, confused or has stopped sweating.

While waiting for help, cool the person right away by:

– Moving them to a cool place, if you can – applying cold water to large areas of the skin or clothing and fanning the person as much as possible.

Following all the recommendations above could make a big difference in how extreme the heat wave can be on your body and will make you far more comfortable. Be safe, be cool and be smart!
