Poker options at today’s casinos

Poker options

Poker options – Imagine a poker game, and you probably picture a scene from the Cincinnati Kid or Casino Royale. Or perhaps you think of the likes of Phil Ivey and Daniel Negreanu playing for thousands in the World Series of Poker. Either way, it’s easy to see why people tend to see poker as a game best left to the experts. That’s a mistake, and a tragic one, as it can prevent people from trying what most agree is the best card game ever invented.

The real magic of poker is that there are so many Poker options. You don’t even have to sit down and play against other people. In fact, if you’re a beginner we’d advise against it until you have spent some time mastering these simpler versions. All of them are available to play at top Canadian online casinos alongside the slots, roulette and other real money casino games, so give them a try.

Video poker

Video poker is the perfect starting point. Although ideal for beginners, it’s also popular among seasoned players – even legendary gambler Floyd Mayweather loves the game! You are dealt five cards on the screen and can choose which to hold and which to have redealt to give your final hand. It’s the ideal way to get familiar with the different poker hands such as a straight or a full house and their relative values. There’s no need to play for real money if you don’t want to – there are numerous free video poker apps you can download for fun and to gain experience.

3-card poker

One of today’s most popular table games among casual players in casinos, 3-card poker reduces the possibilities. Pay the ante, assess your hand and decide whether to double your bet to play or throw your cards in to cut your losses. The side bets add an interesting dimension – the six card bonus looks at yours and thee dealer’s cards combined and makes the best possible 5-card hand. Pair plus rewards you for a pair or better, regardless of the dealer’s hand.

Caribbean Stud

10 years ago, nobody had heard of Caribbean Stud poker. Today, it’s one of the most talked-about live casino games. Like 3-card poker, it’s just you against the dealer, but with five cards each. Look at your hand, plus the one upcard of the dealer’s and from that, decide whether you want to fold or double the ante to play. Like video poker, there are free apps out there that you can install on your phone to try the game out before you play it for real money at the casino.

Casino Holdem

Once you feel you have mastered Caribbean Stud, you are ready to take things up a level.  Casino Holdem was invented about 20 years ago as a training exercise for Texas Holdem players, so you can see where things are heading. Dealer and player are each dealt two cards, with three additional community cards dealt in the middle. Decide whether to play or fold based on your two cards plus the community cards. If you play, two more community cards are dealt. The winner is whoever can form the best hand using their two cards plus three of the community cards.
