- Demand for Quebecois dishes increased by 51% in 2021, overtaking American dishes for the first time in over 3 years
- Quebecers have been eating more comfort foods during COVID-19 pandemic, with data revealing increased orders for rice and potatoes in Plateau Mont-Royal and Victoriaville
- Quebecers are still mindful of veggie intake, with bell peppers a province-wide favourite
New order data from the meal kit provider shows that during the unprecedented times of the COVID-19 pandemic, Quebecers were – and continue to – order comfort foods and local delicacies.
According to the data, orders for Quebecois dishes – like poutine and tourtière – soared 51% in early 2021, overtaking American dishes, which dropped by 38%. In previous years, American dishes were ordered the most in Québec. This significant increase highlights that Quebecers chose to order local dishes during the pandemic.
Furthermore, noticeable changes in the popularity of specific carbs, such as basmati rice and yellow potatoes, show that Quebecers enjoy comfort foods during colder months and times of uncertainty. Basmati rice is a top choice in Plateau Mont-Royal and yellow potatoes are most popular in Victoriaville. Other carb favourites include tortilla, which data reveals is most popular in Saint-Leonard.
Although orders for carbs increased, orders for vegetables also increased in 2021. While the rest of Canada was reaching for comfort foods, Quebecers were adding more vegetables to their meals. The data shows some noticeable changes in the popularity of some food items, especially peppers, in which the demand increased by 60.74% in January 2021, becoming Quebec’s favourite vegetable. Online searches by Quebecers for recipes during the pandemic reflect the increased demand for these vegetables — such as chilli recipe, green bean recipe, and pepper chilli/pepper steak — all of which are dishes that can utilize these ingredients.
