Gambling in Canada: The good, the bad and the future

Gambling in Canada

When it comes to gambling, you will always find people who are in favour and people who are not.  Gambling is an ongoing debate that has divided many lawmakers across the globe. Many people stress that online gambling poses a risk to everyday life and people who delve into gambling will eventually move on to have gambling addictions.  A report that was drawn by the Atlantic Lottery Corporation in Canada states that gambling causes harm. Well, is that really true?

The Responsible Gaming Council, also states that there should be a link that outlines if gambling addictions derive from specific paths. The report should be an outline that will help online casinos in Canada to deploy strategies and frameworks that will help gamblers establish when to stop.  Atlantic Lotto has also taken the issue a step further and has lobbied to have online casinos centralised.  New Brunswick has finally said yes to allowing ALC to launch new games in the region last year. It is said that many territories will follow suit.

Reports need to be make public

Whilst one can clearly see some points and some suggestions that are derived from these gambling reports, unfortunately the reports  are never made public. Whilst, we do get the conclusions and the recommendations, it would be best if people saw the full reports. The recommendations and conclusions state that ‘ there is no evidence that online casinos gambling in Canada will pose a big risk that leads to problematic gambling’.  The analysis continued to outline that gambling has become more of the norm in Canada also.

Some lawmakers are still stressing that some of the online casino games offered at Canadian online casinos offer only a slim chance at placing risk players at higher exposed risks. Some recommendations from the report have obviously been drawn to mitigate any risks of further damage being done.

One of the biggest concerns the report draws is the easy access that gamblers have to online casinos in Canada.  Another concern is that people who are in isolation due to COVID-19 will have a higher access rate to gambling sites. Once the COVID-19 restrictions were in place the iCasino strategy was pitched to many Canadian territories, and having online casinos in Canada is an opportunity for people to have an outlet for having fun.

Mental health is also something to think about when it comes to gambling.  Having a setup that supports risky gamblers is important, especially with all the challenges that the world has faced and is facing.

Credit card usage

We have already witnessed the United Kingdom stating that credit card usage for gambling poses big risks and the UKGC went ahead and imposed restrictions and banning of credit cards for gambling purposes. Usage of credit cards for gambling purposes is another risk factor that is outlined in the RGC report about gambling. When players have a credit card setup and ready to go for gambling purposes, the value of money is diminished and people tend to gamble more.

The report continues to state that young people and also males are at higher risk of facing gambling issues.  The report continues that if people are faced with gambling addictions, their patterns of addictive behaviours could stem to other outlets, like substance abuse.

Canada and its lawmakers have acknowledged that Canadian people are still playing and gambling, so the best way to go ahead is to make gambling legal in the country, and impose sanctions and laws that will assist online casinos in Canada. Providing a regulated place close to home is a better option for Canadian gamblers.

Points to mitigate risks

The ALC have recommended some points to make online Canadian casinos a safe place for all gamblers. These include:

  • Responsible gambling training for all staff working in the casino to help place the player to the core of all operations.
  • Self Exclusion must be easy to find in the gambling site, so if players want to self exclude, they will do so with ease and confidence.
  • Daily limits and spending limits should also be give priority, and punters should be able to get pop ups that will allow them to set personal limits.

The above are recommendations that the ALC feel will help players not play in risky territories and not fall into gambling addictions. Canadian territories especially the one in New Brunswick’s target is to have gambling legal, yet protecting the player at all times. A no harm strategy if you will.

Some marketing strategies have been criticized lately, with some campaigns as given free money to payers. Healthy play has always been on the agenda, and playing responsibly is the goal for Canadian lawmakers.

Conclusion

Canada and its online gambling world is one that is being discussed.  The Canadian Finance Minister has pledged that all the funding from online gambling will be sent into mental health and also supporting problematic and gambling addictions.

Whilst many people and politician parties oppose gambling, Canada is being realistic.  If the gambler does not find a home at Online casinos in Canada, they will still place their bets and gamble offshore.  Having a legal setup at home is the way forward!  Gambling with caution and responsible is what the Canadian government is aiming for.
