Health Alert – If you have visited Carrefour Laval shopping center anywhere between June 13th and June 29th – or any of the other locations listed below, you might want to take heed as you may have been exposed to measles. A measles warning has been expanded beyond the first announced location to several more areas in Laval and additional dates. According to Quebec’s Ministry of Health and Social Services a person carrying the virus who is considered contagious visited the Carrefour Laval shopping center last Wednesday, while a second person was in multiple locations throughout the week.
Measles is a serious illness and can cause complications. Anyone who is unsure if they are protected can also call 811 for advice. Babies under one-year-old, people with weakened immune systems and pregnant women who aren’t adequately vaccinated against the measles should contact Info-Sante 811 to receive an antibody injection before Wednesday July 3rd. The main symptoms of measles are severe fever and redness (red blotches or a rash) on the body and can take a week or two before they appear (a person can be contagious four days before and after the main symptoms appear). Carrefour Laval employees and people who may have come in contact with the infected person elsewhere have already received treatment.Of the three cases reported so far in Laval, two of those infected had been vaccinated.
