FRANCE – Mont Saint-Michel dedicated to the Archangel St. Michel stands on the border of Normandy and Brittany in France. This world famous 8th century Island Abbey has had extensive renovations over the centuries. When approaching the magical Abbey you will simply stare in awe at its beauty.

The Abbey houses 50 residents in its tiny village, over 60 buildings within the Abby walls contain a hotel, restaurant, tourist shops and the most spectacular views.

Mont Saint-Michel village

Mont Saint-Michel is an island located one kilometre off the northwestern coast of France at the mouth of the Couesnon river. One of France’s most recognizable landmarks, visited by more than 3 million people each year, making Mont Saint-Michel the second largest tourist monument in France, just behind the Eiffel tower. Mont Saint-Michel and its bay are on the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites.

If you are travelling by car it is best to take only what you need for the night and leave the rest of your belongings in the car. The climb can be daunting at times (approximately 31 stories to the top of the Abbey) so wear comfortable shoes.

No trip to Mont Saint-Michel is complete without dinning at La Mère Poulard restaurant known for its amazing omelette. The restaurant was opened by Anne Annette Boutiaut and husband Victor Poulard on January 14, 1873.

The giant omelettes are cooked over a wood burning fire and resemble a souffle. A taste you will not soon forget.

Mont Saint-Michel is easily accessible from Paris. Trains can be taken to Rennes and buses leave from Rennes 4 times daily. The bus from Rennes is right outside the train stations north exit. Follow signs for the bus station (Gare Routière). You can take a virtual tour here.

Prices (one-way)

You can keep things easy and buy your coach ticket with your TGV ticket. Alternatively, you can buy a bus ticket at the Rennes train station or from the driver on the bus itself.

If you prefer to stay on the train, you can change trains at Rennes for the Pontorson-Mont St-Michel train station. From there, a $5 (approximately) shuttle runs to the Mont Saint-Michel.
