The Lakeshore General Hospital Foundation (LGHF) announced today the closing of the 2016–2018 Capital Campaign Life can change in an instant, which exceeded all expectations by raising a total of 8.2 million dollars, hence $200,000 more than the set target. The Capital Campaign aims to expand, modernize and improve the infrastructures and equipment in three priority areas, namely the Cardiac and Intensive Care Units as well as the Mental Health and Geriatric Units of the Lakeshore General Hospital (LGH). The Foundation took advantage of this important announcement to unveil the new Recognition Wall, a true work of art designed to highlight the tremendous generosity of donors. The Recognition Wall is located in the corridor of the main entrance of the Lakeshore General Hospital. (LGH).
The three priority sectors to be expanded and improved
Development and integration of the Cardiac and Intensive Care Units—5 million dollars Phase 1 completed: Includes the addition of four new specialized Intensive Care rooms, for a total of 15 rooms increasing the admission capacity to an additional 270 patients per year;
Phase 2 in progress: Includes the overhaul of the 11 existing ICU rooms, the reconfiguration and integration of the 8 Cardiology beds and the concentration of vital care expertise into one multifunctional efficient location.
Relocation and reconfiguration of the Mental Health Unit—1 million dollars (project to be completed after ICU). Move the unit into a wider and brighter setting, while increasing the number of single occupancy rooms, reducing overcrowding and providing patients with greater privacy, dedicated activity spaces and creating a therapeutic environment conducive to rehabilitation and quick social reintegration of patients.
Improvement and expansion of the Geriatric Care Unit—2 million dollars (project to be completed after Mental Health Unit). Provide best practice care through a holistic approach, including specialized furniture, single rooms, isolation rooms to contain infections, bathrooms with wheelchair and specialized equipment access, improved common areas and therapeutic socialization zones to help our seniors return home as quickly as possible.
A dynamic modern-looking Recognition Wall
The LGHF wrapped up its Capital Campaign by unveiling the new Recognition Wall, which pays tribute to all those who, since the inception of the LGHF, have generously and significantly contributed to improving health care for West Islanders. There are many individuals, patients, businesses, municipalities, annual partners and board members, whose involvement is recognized and highlighted, in addition to the Foundation’s history, some accomplishments and patient testimonials. Designed by Brook Global, the Recognition Wall will be updated annually through an Easy-Change System.
I am extremely proud to announce that at the end of our 2016–2018 Capital Campaign, the LGHF has surpassed its 8 million dollar goal, thanks to the great generosity of our loyal donors and the hard work of the Foundation’s outstanding team. Over and above our Annual Campaign, which aims to raise the funds to meet the timely and functional needs of the LGH, we have embarked on this major campaign to provide our community with state-of-the-art human and compassionate care, close to home. We want to ensure that the care being given at our hospital meets the highest standards, when our loved ones, our friends and community members need it the most, says Heather Holmes, Managing Director of the LGHF.
The population served by the LGH has increased fivefold since it opened in 1965, going from 60,000 to close to 300,000—a 400% increase. The West Island community is aging and the LGH is now dealing with increasingly complex medical and psychosocial conditions.
