Following the lead of Calgary’s city council that voted unanimously on September 30th to formally oppose Quebec’s Bill 21 and then Toronto’s city council on October 31st unanimously passing a motion calling for a national campaign to denounce the controversial Bill – Michel Coteau, an Ontario Liberal MPP(Member of Provincial Parliament), will put forth a motion in the provincial legislature on November 7th to assert that the province is ‘committed to defending religious rights and freedoms’.

In a press release he states, “As a former Minister Responsible for Anti-Racism, I believe a critical duty of the Members of our Legislature is to recognize, embrace, promote and protect the rights of all Ontarians guaranteed under Canada’s Charter of Rights and Freedoms, and under the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights signed by Canada in 1976… it is my hope that you and your respective caucuses will join me in supporting this motion to convey with solidarity and strength a clear message to Ontarians, and to all Canadians, that this province celebrates and stands together with all our people in support of our diversity, and in defense of our rights and freedoms.” Coteau is asking the government of Ontario to ‘oppose any law that would seek to restrict or limit the religious freedoms of our citizens’ in order to protect and promote religious rights’. Premier Doug Ford has yet to comment.
