Look, we know Montreal is the greatest city in Canada. Maybe it’s the best city in the world, I don’t know. But, although it sounds outrageous, we Montréalers have to leave this wonderful city occasionally. And d’you know what? It’s not always a bad thing. There are so many exciting things outside of Montreal and unique ways of getting there.
So, for those who feel brave enough to venture outside of “The City of a Hundred Steeples,” we’ve compiled a list of unforgettable experiences to try when travelling from Montreal.
- Quebec City, Quebec
Quebec City is the perfect experience for those who want to escape Montreal. For those driving, it’ll take three hours to get there. But you could also skip the drive — travel in style with an Aircraft Charter, and you’ll be there in under an hour. This would be the best option if you’re looking to maximize your time in Quebec City, and with so much to do, it’s definitely worth your while.
Old Quebec almost feels like you’re stepping into the Old Town of a quaint European city, and the castle on the hill reminds us of Prague. The town is a UNESCO World Heritage site, offering a step back in time with cobblestone streets and 17th-century architecture. Unlike Montreal’s modern vibrancy, Quebec City is all about history. Explore the iconic Château Frontenac and the charming Petit-Champlain district, where picture-perfect boutiques and cafés line Instagrammable streets. Foodies can indulge in authentic Quebecois cuisine, from poutine and tourtière to maple-infused treats, or savour upscale dining at Le Continental.
The St. Lawrence River also offers an alternative view of the city by cruise. Quebec City’s slower pace and preserved history contrast sharply with Montreal’s cosmopolitan buzz, making it an idyllic destination for those looking for a weekend break from the hustle and bustle.
- Ottawa, Ontario
Ottawa, one of Canada’s unsung heroes and recently voted one of the best cities in the world to live in, offers a mix of natural, cultural, and historical experiences. Located just fifty minutes from Montreal by private charter, Ottawa is ideal for a day trip or a weekend getaway. Its refined and tranquil atmosphere marks a sharp contrast to Montreal’s vibrancy.
Start your trip at Parliament Hill, which is perfect for lovers of Gothic Revival architecture and where you’ll also find stunning views of the Ottawa River. Take a guided tour of the Parliament buildings, then wander along the Rideau Canal, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that doubles as a scenic waterway in summer and the world’s largest skating rink in winter.
Ottawa is also home to the nation’s finest museums, like the Canadian Museum of History and the National Gallery of Canada. The latter houses artworks by Dürer, an installation by Ai Weiwei, and the famous spider sculpture “Maman.”
I recommend at least two days to experience Ottawa’s highlights fully. This impressive yet understated city provides a beautiful escape, blending Canada’s past and present in a unique, picturesque setting.
- Montpelier, Vermont
The smallest state capital in the US, Montpelier, Vermont, is an inviting destination known for its picturesque streets and cute local vibe surrounded by nature. Nestled in the Green Mountains, Montpelier offers experiences inspired by its historic charm and modern sustainability. It’s the place to visit for a foodie break, with farm-to-table concepts like Kismet and the New England Culinary Institute shaping the town’s national reputation for locally sourced cuisine. The Vermont State House is a must-visit landmark, while the nearby Hubbard Park offers hiking trails with panoramic city views.
Explore the town’s boutique shops, such as Bear Pond Books and the artisan galleries along Main Street. Montpelier’s compact, walkable layout makes it easy to experience New England charm and offers a refreshing change from Montreal’s sprawling layout.
Getting to Montpelier from Montreal is straightforward. You could fly direct from Montreal in around 90 minutes, but you might enjoy this trip more by car. It’s a scenic 2.5-hour drive through rural Vermont, with several picturesque spots for a break to stretch your legs. You could also go with a private car service and make the most of the views.
- Harrington, Quebec: A Hidden Gem of Tranquility
Now, here’s one you might not have expected. Nestled in the Laurentian Mountains, Harrington, Quebec, is a dream for nature lovers and those seeking the perfect spot for rejuvenation. Tucked away from bustling hubs like Mont-Tremblant, this hidden gem offers magical landscapes, winding rivers, and a solid connection to the great outdoors.
Harrington’s charm lies in its simplicity. The Harrington Valley, dotted with quaint cabins and huge forests, is perfect for hiking, cycling, and immersing yourself in local wildlife. I’d recommend heading out here in the fall, as the leaves start turning and the colours are breathtaking.
Harrington remains refreshingly untouched by large-scale tourism, which gives it a small-town feel. Just 90 minutes from Montreal by car, Harrington is an easy drive for a weekend retreat.
A Gem Surrounded by Stunning Jewels
So, there we have it. Despite the beauty of Montreal, you certainly wouldn’t lose out by taking a few weekends to visit these incredible destinations just a stone’s throw away. From the historic city of Ottawa to the European feel of Quebec City, there’s something to dazzle even the most discerning travellers around this impressive region.
