Write for Montreal Times

We're always looking for sharp, curious writers who love Montreal.

Who We're Looking For

We welcome pitches from journalists, writers, photographers, and subject-matter experts who have something compelling to say about Montreal. Whether you're an experienced reporter or a first-time contributor with a great story, we want to hear from you.

We're particularly interested in writers who live in and know Montreal well — people who can cover their neighbourhood, community, or area of expertise with authority and insight.

What We're Looking For

We publish a wide range of content, but what we love most are stories that are:

  • Local and specific — stories that could only happen in Montreal
  • Timely — tied to something happening now, or something our readers need to know about
  • Well-reported — grounded in facts, sources, and on-the-ground reporting
  • Readable — written in a clear, engaging voice that respects the reader's time

We cover: city news and politics, arts and culture, food and drink, real estate and development, community profiles, and lifestyle. If your story fits one of these areas and has a strong Montreal angle, we want to hear it.

Pitch Guidelines

Before pitching, please read a few of our recent stories to get a feel for our voice and coverage. Then send us a pitch that includes:

  • A brief description of the story (2–4 sentences): what it's about, why it matters now, and why Montreal Times readers will care
  • Who you'd interview or what sources you'd consult
  • Your proposed length (we typically publish between 400 and 1,200 words)
  • A short bio and links to 2–3 clips of your previous work (if available)

Please do not send completed drafts unless we've asked for them. Pitches only, please.

What to Expect

We read every pitch we receive. If your story is a fit, we'll respond within 5–7 business days. If you haven't heard back after two weeks, feel free to follow up once. If we pass on a pitch, it doesn't mean we're not interested in hearing from you again — we encourage you to pitch us something else.

Compensation

We compensate contributors for published work. Rates vary depending on the length, complexity, and type of story. We'll discuss compensation when we respond to your pitch.
