COVID-19 in Quebec hits over 100 000 cases and keeps rising

COVID-19 in Quebec

It is a grim milestone. On Sunday October 25th, Quebec reported another 879 confirmed, positive cases of the Covid-19 virus – bringing the total number of cases in the province since the start of the pandemic to 100,114. With the total number of cases in all of Canada at 216,104, Quebec’s numbers count for over 46% of cases.  As well, the number of deaths in the province attributed to the virus, has reached 6,143 and counts for over 61% in all of the country, now at 9,946. Ontario is also experiencing a significant surge in numbers with 70,373 confirmed cases and 3093 deaths as of October 25th.

Dr. Cecile Tremblay, Quebec’s infectious disease specialist said at a press conference, ‘the fact cases are stable indicates the current lockdown strategy has prevented the situation from spiraling out of control’ and that ‘the measures haven’t yet led to a decrease in new cases’ and she expects the red-zone measures will be extended beyond Wednesday. ‘We don’t want to go backward… we don’t want to go back to closing schools and the economy. I think an effort has to be made to look at where we can act in a more pointed way’ she added. Quebec’s 28-day partial lockdown was supposed to be until Wednesday October 28th, but according to Premier François Legault, ‘the measures will stay in place until the number of cases goes down’.

Since the current ‘lockdown’ numbers in most regions have remained somewhat stable. If Quebecers continue to properly follow protocols we should soon see a significant decrease across the province.
