Netflix has rolled out their beta for game streaming. Right now it’s only available to a small selection of members in Canada and the UK. The limited test launched with another rollout set to take place in the coming weeks. The global streaming platform launched its games service in 2021, but they have since acquired several gaming studios. They include Next Games, Night School Studio, Boss Fight Entertainment and Spry Fox.
Netflix has the current aim of growing its gaming influence, and in 2022, it had 23.3 million games downloaded with 1.7 million daily users. Even though the numbers sound impressive, this equates to less than 1% of their total subscriber base.

Canadian Gaming is in High Demand
Canada’s annual gaming revenue stands at 4.68 billion USD. Mobile gaming is one of the top-grossing segments, with digital gaming sales surpassing physical sales. This statistic isn’t surprising when you take into account the growth of the Canadian gaming sector. This sector is set to reach 3,925 million USD in 2024. Approximately 18.9 million people signed up at a live casino Canada hosts, with popular games including LuckyDays Roulette to Golden Wealth Baccarat and Three Card Poker. A lot of the rise in popularity is because 16% of Canadians live in rural areas so it’s harder for them to access traditional casino establishments.
Netflix has seen a market opportunity and has chosen to capitalize on it. With 35 games currently available on the platform and 55 in development, the streaming service is working hard to address player concerns while doing what it can to improve the gaming experience over time. Right now, the platform is in its early stages but a launch in the UK and Canada, if successful, could mean that more countries are soon added to the streaming service’s platform. We could even see a console release for the app at a later date, which would lead to a boom in the platform’s popularity with gamers across the world.

Netflix Games Currently Only Operate on Selected Devices
Netflix games will only operate on certain devices. Right now, they include Amazon TV streaming players, Google’s Chromecast, Roku devices, TVs and Nvidia Shield TV. Additional devices are going to be added as time goes on, and they intend to make games playable for people across the world. While Netflix may be early in its gaming journey, they do hope to be able to make games playable for people all across the world. The company has hired global software developers to work on the games that it is developing, with high hopes for bringing new and exciting opportunities to the market. This could include the release of Netflix-exclusive games that reflect the titles that they have on the streaming platform currently.
Whether or not Netflix will gain a foothold on the market is yet to be seen, but one thing is evident. The Canadian market loves to game, and with the sector growing more by the year, it’s an exciting time for developers.
