Workers’ Alliance invites the public to its inter-union and popular protest in solidarity with Air Canada flight attendants. The rally will take place tonight, August 18, at Square Phillips in Montreal, starting at 5:30 p.m.
Among the unions that have endorsed the event are the CSN’s Conseil central du Montréal Métropolitain, the Syndicat des professionnels et professionnelles du Cégep de Saint-Laurent (CSN), the Syndicat des Travailleuses et Travailleurs d’Amazon Laval (CSN), and the Syndicat des employés de la SQDC (SCFP-5454). Other endorsements may follow.
The Workers’ Alliance says, “This protest is being held in support of Air Canada flight attendants, who have decided to defy the federal labour minister’s attempt to force them back to work, despite the company’s stubborn refusal to negotiate in good faith.”
“This is the latest in a series of attacks by the provincial and federal governments on the right to strike (Bill 89, forced return to work for union members at Canada Post, CN, ports, etc.). Workers’ Alliance therefore calls for solidarity and for us to join forces against these attacks that threaten our rights and our bargaining power.
“Defying the back-to-work order was courageous and necessary. It sends a clear message to banker Carney’s government that Canada’s working class will fight to the end for its rights. It is only right that we, as citizens and workers, show our support by organizing a demonstration like this.”
– Benoît Dumais, spokesperson for Workers’ Alliance
