The 25th edition of the Fantasia Film Festival is underway from August 5 to 25, with its eclectic selection of horror, science-fiction, fantasy, and, yes, some romance too. The festival also keeps a commitment to showcase Asian movies, part of its original mandate.
When is the Fantasia Film Festival
Most of the shows will be online. However, there are a few presentations on the big screen. The opening film, James Gunn’s “The Suicide Squad,” is shown at the historic Imperial Theatre this Thursday, August 5 (the film is released the next day). According to the festival organizers: “Gunn’s no-holds-barred take on the DC team-up finds Super-Villains Harley Quinn, Bloodsport, Peacemaker and a collection of cons incarcerated at Belle Reve prison joining the super-secret, super-shady Task Force X as they are dropped off at the remote, enemy-infused island of Corto Maltese.” (We should add that the fictitious island’s name is a tribute to the iconic comic book character created by Hugh Pratt).
Among the science-fiction films, we will find South Korea’s “Seabok” (directed by Lee Yong-ju) featuring a secret agent in charge of protecting the first human clone. “Glasshouse” (Kelsey Egan) is a South African film focused on a dystopian society and the vicissitudes of a family. “It is a Summer Film” (Soushi Matsumoto) is a Japanese film about making a film, and the story of a teen’s coming of age. From Taiwan comes “The Sadness” (Rob Jabbaz), a story full of zombies.
