Amazon considering a $1 billion investment in Quebec

Amazon is apparently considering an investment of close to $1 Billion in Quebec, according to La Presse newspaper – who obtained a document from the provincial government through an access to information request. The details are unclear as the document was heavily edited, but it indicates the investment would be made over a 10 year period and expected to be channeled through one of its Amazon Web Services cloud divisions, which opened one of its data centres in December of 2016 in the Montreal region. Part of the money would be used for the hiring of executive staff, managers, accountants and specialized legal and administrative staff.

Last year, Montreal had been considered among several cities to be home to Amazon’s second headquarters, but it lost out after a one year search to New York City. It is possible Montreal was eliminated because they already had other potential projects lined up for Quebec. The location of its Quebec Data Centre has been considered a ‘secret’ – but it known by many that it is being built on a 155,000-square-foot centre in Varennes, on land once owned by Hydro-Quebec. To date, there have been no comments offered by Amazon concerning the investment and centre.
