Congratulations Canada places 6th for most peaceful country. There are many great things about Canada and being ranked the 6th most peaceful country, out of 163 in the world, is certainly one of them. To put it into better perspective, the USA was ranked at 124. It is the twelfth edition of the Global Peace Index (GPI), which ranks 163 independent states and territories according to their level of peacefulness. The top five countries from 1 to 5 were Iceland, New Zealand, Austria, Portugal and then Denmark. The bottom five countries from 159 to 163 were Somalia, Iraq, South Sudan, Afghanistan and then Syria.

The factors that are looked at to determine the rankings include: GPI Indicators, Perceptions of criminality, Security officers & police, Homicide, Incarceration, Access to weapons, Intensity of internal conflict, Violent demonstrations, Violent crime, Political instability, Political terror, Weapons imports, Terrorism impact, Deaths from internal conflict, Internal conflicts fought, Military expenditure, Armed services personnel, UN peacekeeping funding, Nuclear and heavy weapons, Weapons exports, Displaced people, Neighbouring countries relations, External conflicts fought and Deaths from external conflict.
The report was produced by the Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP) and covers 99.7% of the world’s population, using ’23 qualitative and quantitative indicators from highly respected sources, and measures the state of peace using three thematic domains’: the level of Societal Safety and Security; the extent of Ongoing Domestic and International Conflict; and the degree of Militarization. The research is used by governments, academic institutions, think tanks and non-governmental organizations and by intergovernmental institutions like the OECD, The Commonwealth Secretariat, the World Bank and the United Nations. As the IEP states on their website: “We aim to create a paradigm shift in the way the world thinks about peace. We use data-driven research to show that peace is a positive, tangible and achievable measure of human well-being and development”.
